Summary

In the year 2030, Ophelia Grey wakes up to cold static and a perfect world. When an argument over a family pet forces Ophelia to question her childhood memories, she begins to understand the horrible truth surrounding her ideal life and the experiment that perpetuates it. In a society where identities are constructed from the remnants of Youtube videos and social media timelines, Ophelia attempts to reach the outside world and ultimately end the cycle of destruction and creation. But with starvation and violence closing in, the reset becomes imminent.

The Implausible Drowning of Ophelia Grey is an upcoming novella from writer Debbie Lindsey.

Excerpt:

“Who decides?”

“For the reset? We will.” Alice hesitated a few seconds. “I will.” She added.

“Who decides that we aren’t human.”

“Ophelia,” Alice said, not without affection, “I, We, make you. Again and again I make you all. And yet it never works, does it? It seems we’re both limited by our programming.

To put it simply, if I am not human, how could you be?”
