Long ago the Elves fell from the stars and taught men to sing the Words of Miracles. Many believed them to be sent from the gods to gift men with the ability to lead the world to a better place. Not that any of that matters. The Elves died or left a thousand years ago, the secrets of magic drowned in the wars of men. The gods and their magic abandoned the world. Now the only people that use magic have stolen it, using it with no real understanding of how it works and the consequences of it. That’ll never come back to bite them.

The story follows two characters, Miro and Somov.

Miro was always expecting (and expected) to become a Hunter. He was born in Havenhill, headquarters of the order, to parents who strongly encouraged him to become what they wished they could be: a Hunter. Unfortunately, everyone outside twelve yards of Havenhill Abbey’s front door hates or distrusts the Hunters and everything to do with them and their depraved "magic."

Somov has always been useless. He was orphaned and ended up at the Abbey. He was terrible at everything to do with being a Hunter, except the planning, and being cunning and sly and all that. The point is, he was the sharpest tool in the shed, but he was rubbish at handling sharp tools.
