"The Earth is no more. Out in the asteroid belt, mankind discovered magic aboard an alien artifact. This proved to be the key to exploring deep space but also attracted invaders to their home planet. Unable to fight back, humanity abandoned its homeworld and embraced the unknown. Armed with the secrets to manipulating the fundamental forces of the universe, humanity mastered faster than light travel and, in the process, made contact with non-hostile intelligent life. Without a home world of its own, humanity has spread out among the stars to become part of intergalactic society.

Generations have passed, and humanity endures. On the pastoral agricultural world of Equinox, Adora goes about the typical life of a young student under the protection of Clementine, her legal guardian and local mage. Unknown to the duo, though, their peaceful existence is about to be altered by the arrival of some unfriendly visitors, an event which sends Adora beyond Equinox and out into the Void."

Hi. I’m George Pitre, and I’m a writer from southern Louisiana who wants to take you to a place where the lines between Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and even Horror are a lot more blurry. In the age of pulps we were less concerned about the I want to tell stories that call back to the works where mysticism and blaster can sit comfortably side by side.

The Girl Who Blinked is one such story. It is an adventure of science and wonder in a universe of magic originally conceived as something for my young daughter to read. I wanted something that would give her the same sense of awe that I felt when I first discovered genre fiction, and I wanted something that would show her that it was possible for her to make a difference in the world.

What I came up with is the story of a young girl named Adora, who is caught up in adventure when she accidentally leaves the colony world she grew up on behind. On her travels she falls in with aliens, mercenaries, traitors, and thieves while trying to get back to her legal guardian Clementine. She also is forced to face some greater truths about the universe, no longer under the protective gaze of Clem.

Aside from being a story about a young girl going on an adventure, it is the first in what I envision as a triptych of stories that serve as a glimpse into a greater universe where magic has allowed and forced mankind to flee Earth. Space pirates use swords because despite all the advances, venting into space is still enough of a risk that firearms are frowned upon. Ship Worthy mages hold together star ships traveling at light speed with their magic and their will. It is the type of universe where almost anything can happen.

Below you can read a rough sample chapter set after Adora has fallen in with a crew of freelancers. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
