Members of a secret society are taking their plans to expand their power to the next stage. They are the last descendants of a lost dynasty, and in their ancient history their leaders enhanced their wisdom, cunning, and physical strength by forming telepathic links to members of species of sentient fish (picture something eel like, bearing resemblance to the works of H.R. Giger). In this symbiotic relationship, the dreams of the humans and fish mix together, enhancing their brain’s neurological ability to restore itself while also acting as a kind of nootropic. But this relationship is demanding, and only those of the purest royal bloodlines can survive it.

Centuries later after the fall of their dynasty, these last descendants of the royal blood line believe they have discovered someone with the right genetic qualifications to once again take on this mantle of "deep dream king". Their determined candidate is attempting to undergo the synchronization with the fish, but it is a battle that pushes his body to its limits, and now it is beginning to tear him apart, not just physically but across space and time. 

In an attempt to salvage the situation, they turn to a little known healer that practices a lost art.
