This story takes place in Wyttskyn, the most mysterious and dangerous region of a larger kingdom, often left alone by the neighboring regions. Wyttskyn is a place full of old forests, swamps and mountains, where humans have a fearful respect for nature and the horrors it hides. The local population is full of superstition and supposedly descendants of Saint Wytt, an ancient hero responsible for taming nature by forging a pact with it ages ago.
The Wyttskyn family rules the region and is widely known for one peculiarity: every few generations an heir is born with extremely pale flesh and red eyes. Throughout the ages these marked individuals have distinguished themselves, and nowadays being born like that is often seem both as a gift and as a curse. Years before this tale begins two brothers, identical twins, have been born with the Wyttskyn mark. Being younger brothers to the family heir, one was trained to become a priest while the other left his birthplace to be trained in arms abroad.
However, after a sudden and lethal plague, the twins father and older brother perished. Edrik, the priest, assumed Wyttskyn command losing his faith in the process. Derik, the warrior, returned home with his retinue of followers to claim what he believes is his birthright. How the twins will deal with their inheritance and the other claims will have a great impact in the tales to follow. Edrik will enter a dark path, descending into madness as he fights for his family survival and learns older and forgotten arts. Derik will gain strenght as a military leader and vow to crush all opposition to his desires. The outcome will change the future of Wyttskyn forever.
This is a work in progress started several years ago and finally being prepared for publication. Its main influences are the evil lurking Lovecraft’s and Poe’s work, the "anti" fantasy approach and grey characters/situations by George RR Martin and several personal experiences by creating and taking place into D&D campaigns.
The narrative will mostly follow Edrik the fallen priest, but often a point of view from a different character will be added to enrich the text and the lore associated to the tale. For instance: preceding the description of Whyttskyn is a report written in first person to King Makk the Wise by a scholar of the mathematics and magic guild, describing Whyttskyn last imigration records and the predicted higher odds of being killed if a foreigner.
I am a author of several technical published work, and this is my first real attempt to finish a dark fantasy novel (even though I have several in work-in-progress status). Please feel free to comment on the premises above, and wait for a sample chapter.
