Excerpt 1

After finding the right street, Deanna started down a long and winding road, surrounded on both sides with shrubs and the occasional statue of what she could only guess were characters from the many different games Fun-O-Vision had produced.  She slowed the car down every time she came up to one to get a better view of it.  She was hoping to find one she thought looked interesting, in case they decided to test whether or not she really knew anything about any of their video games.  She had spent most of the previous night reading through the company’s website along with their page on Wikipedia, as well as the pages of a few of their more popular games.  But a person could only take in so much lore in one night and at this point she was only hoping to take in a few visual details to help her in case they asked about her favorite character or why she enjoyed a certain game.

‘It has to be the art style’ she had practiced certain answers while she ate breakfast this morning, ‘I love how the colors and backgrounds really set it apart from the rest of the games you’ve produced.’  It didn’t matter which game they talked to her about, she had blanket statements ready for all of them.

Driving through a few more curves and past about ten more statues depicting monsters frozen mid-roar, heroes striking poses in heavy looking armor, and one small creature that looked like a cross between a rabbit and a bat that Deanna decided was her favorite, she finally saw the Fun-O-Vision building in front of her.

Before today, she had imagined the building to look like more of a high-tech Willy Wonka’s factory or even a huge arcade machine that allowed workers to enter through the quarter slot, but what stood in front of her was so bland and normal-looking that if it hadn’t been for the statues lining the path behind her she would have assumed she had the wrong address.

The building itself was about nine stories tall, judging from the numerous windows going up each side, and concrete walls that had to be the most boring style of grey Deanna had ever seen.  A parking lot that held about twenty cars at the moment surrounded the building with a tiny guard shack and boom gate blocking the only way in and out of the parking lot.

From a distance, Deanna could have sworn she saw a set of dark blue curtains blocking the view into the guard shack, but as she pulled up to the shack and stopped in front of the gate she realized that it wasn’t curtains she had been seeing, but the shirt of an enormous man who took up almost the entirety of the small room.

Question after question began filling Deanna’s head as she rolled down her window.  The man had to be well over six feet tall and while the sight of such a large man in such a tiny room was almost comical, Deanna guessed that most of the mass was muscle and not fat, judging from his square jaw that fact that most of mass was on chest inside of his stomach.

The enormous man slid the window booth window open, a clipboard in one hand that looked like it could be crushed with just a twitch of his fingers.

“Name.” His voice was deep without any tones, the singular word coming out more like a statement than a question.  He looked at Deanna for only a second before looking down at his clipboard.

“Deanna Turner” she replied, trying to remain professional despite the small lump of fear that was growing inside her for some reason, “I’m here for a job interview, they said I was-“

“Park in the front lot” the man continued on, not looking up, “go through the main entrance and wait in lobby until someone calls for you.”

Deanna opened her mouth to thank the man, but before she could he had already closed the window and a sharp buzzing noise came from the boom gate as it swung upwards.

“Off to a great start” Deanna said to herself as she drove past the gate, somewhat relieved to be away from whomever it was they had guarding this place.
