Discussion

Greetings!

I apologize for the long delay between updates, life has a way of disrupting even the best laid plans. But, have no fear, I come bearing not one but TWO gifts to make it up to you!

First, I appreciate all of the positive feedback about the first part of Story 4. Monsoon. Agent Blake, in particular, seems to be a popular character so I've put together some concept art so you Agent Blake fans can picture him the same way I do. Just click on the small version below for a full size rendition of our favorite Agent enduring the ceaseless rains of the Monsoon.

If you are curious about how his adventure continues, have no fear. As soon as the project hits 50 follows I will upload the next part of Monsoon and you can see how far he gets in investigating the death of the Senator. The more people you tell about the project, the faster you get to find out.

Second, I've uploaded the first part of Story 6. Transport! This story follows Lieutenant Murphy and her experience working at the Block, a high security prison of the future. Just head over to the project page to give it a read. Note that there is profanity in this one so if you don't like profanity... ummm... you should probably not read it. Please let me know what you think, your feedback makes all the difference.

That's all for this week. If life agrees I will get back to doing the regular updates so keep your eyes out for more treats in the near future.

The End is Near!

Cheers,
Sean

Greetings!

Thanks for all the feedback on the cover concepts, we had a clear winner which is now the working cover for The End!

This week's treat is the first part of a new story/chapter. Chapter 4: Monsoon deals with how environmental engineering can be both a good thing and a bad thing, told through the story of FBI Special Agent Kiran Blake. The first part sets the plot and the tone of the story, let me know what you think. You can find it on the project website

I will post up some completed stories, but in most cases I will post up excerpts like this one to make sure everyone has a good reason to pre-order the complete book. (Yes, frustrating, I know!) If you have thoughts on where you think the story should go, based on the excerpt, please let me know.

I'm still open to suggestions for technologies to be the basis for one of the last few stories so please make suggestions in the comments if you have them.

Cheers,
Sean

Thanks for all the feedback! The winner is... #1. Keep an eye out for some more goodies in the next update.

(The image I used is Public Domain so we're in the clear. Thanks for the tip Russ!)

Make sure to check NASA's acceptable use policy for the blue marble image.  I like #2.  It is very Shel Siverstein.  Not sure that's what you're going for though.

#1 !

#1 is more hopeful, but I really like the simple (albeit draining) design of #2! Also, the tagline is succinct and catchy.

#1!

In between writing and editing stories, I took some time out this weekend to put together some cover concepts for the book! It turns out to be hard to depict the end of the world without being very depressing, but I have two possible designs that I think capture the character and mood of the book very well.

I would love your input as to which cover you like better. You can see both options here:

(click on the cover to see a full resolution version)

Just leave a comment which which design you prefer, or if you have other ideas on the cover design please send me those as well! Also, let me know how you feel about the tagline "Tales of technology and armageddon".

I look forward to posting up some excerpts from other stories in the coming weeks, along with some concept art that I have been working on to help the writing process.

Cheers,

Sean

Greetings!

I am excited about all of the interest in The End, it has exceeded all of my expectations. I look forward to producing a book that all of you will enjoy.

Most of the stories that will form the chapters of The End are either already written, in draft form or well developed outlines. I have started to put together a table of contents so you know what kinds of technologies and topics those stores will cover, and you can see it for yourself below:

The End: Chapter Listing

  1. Quorum (Genetics)
  2. Passphrase (Data Privacy/Security)
  3. Orbit (Astrophysics)
  4. Monsoon (Environmental Engineering)
  5. Transport (Smart Weapons)
  6. Dead Too Much (Medical Science)

These cover about half of the total stories I expect to form the final book. I would love to include at least one story that covers a technology or science suggested by one of you, the loyal supporters of the book!

So, please, suggest technologies in the comments and I will write a story based on one of the suggestions for inclusion in the final product. I look forward to seeing what you suggest.

Cheers,
Sean

I'm very excited about this project, as I really enjoy exploring new technologies and thinking about how they might affect the future. Obviously, ending the world is a dark vision of the future but it provides a fertile ground for engaging narratives.

Each chapter is a different, self-contained story with a different setting and a different set of characters. They are designed to be quick reads so you can enjoy them on the bus, train or anywhere in between.

I'll add more chapters as time goes on, so follow the project to get updates!
