Evelyn sat perched atop of the roof, shrouded in her own shadows, the pale green light of the moon shining down on her. It was still hard to get used to, looking up and seeing the moon glowing a radiant green light. She looked down at the streets below, casually observing the people. *They’re all so insignificant*, she thought. *If only they knew.* She wondered what they were thinking, wondered if any of them were supers. If so, what powers would they have? She was becoming obsessed with her abilities. She was amazed they could go about their buisness knowing that there were people out there with extraordinary abilities. Like her.

She wondered when she would meet another like her. She knew she wouldn’t be the one to walk up and expose herself. She would have to catch somebody else using their abilities. *I will find others like me. I have to,* she thought.

Evelyn gazed on, lost in her own thoughts. Drunk patrons stumbled from the bar, bursting into laughter. One man was helping his... friend? Co-worker? Evelyn couldn’t tell, but the sober one was obviously annoyed with the drunk one. *What will the rest of their night bring,* she thought. She always loved to people watch. She was good at standing back and letting the world happen around her.

 Suddenly her thoughts were interrupted.

“Bitch, gimme yer purse and stay quiet and I won’ cut you up right here in the ally.”

Evelyn stared down to ally below. The words had come from there. She changed vantage points quietly to watch as a terrified young woman was being mugged at knife point. She was dressed to catch someone’s eye, her top calling attention to her breasts and her belly and her mini skirt exposed most of her legs. She wore high heels and her purse was white leather and expensive looking. *Just another night downtown for her, probably on the way to one of those bars across the street.* Evelyn thought. She watched as the woman with shaky knees handed the purse over to the thief, careful not to make eye contact.

Evelyn studied the man. He was wearing dark clothes, easier to hide at night. He was unattractive, in his late thirties from the look of him. His hair and beard were unkept and scraggly. He looked like he was homeless, maybe desperate. He held his knife out, pointed at the woman, so that the full blade was visable. She noticed he had a second knife strapped to his ankle. No gun though, at least not that she could see. What kind of person robs at knife point, Evelyn wondered. The woman didn’t run. The thought probably never occurred to her. She held out her shaky hand, clutching her purse.

“He-he-he-here, t-t-take it. Just don’t hurt me, p-p-please.” The woman stammered petrified with fear. She clung to the wall behind her, trying to keep away from the man, and started crying.

“Yer not going to say a single word, you here me? Not one… single…word!” The man barked at the defenseless woman, feeling confident, thinking he had full control of the situation. Evelyn thought to herself, *He must feel real big huh, must feel like a rockstar. You have her purse, now leave her alone, asshole.*

The man didn’t let up. Ruthlessly, he reached out and yanked on her hair to make her look. “I asked you a question, bitch.” He said softly holding her close to his face. Evelyn barley made out what he was saying.

“I won’t say anything.” She replied softly, sobbing. “I won’t say a word. Just go, leave me alone. I have nothing more you want.”

“Oh, I don’t know.” His tone changed to something more sinister, “I’m sure you have plenty I want. In fact...” The man said with a smirk, pulling her even closer by the hair. “Maybe I should just take you, right here in the ally.”

“Oh, what the hell!” Evelyn said to herself as she watch the man start to tear at her clothes. “It’s ok, doll, your gonna like it, I promise.” The man said creepily.

Evelyn wouldn’t watch this anymore. Thievery she would ignore, rape was something else entirely. She felt an icy rage inside.

She dissolved into shadow and glided down into the alleyway. A part of her noticed how effortless it was becoming to move as shadows, and she was delighted.

She emerged from the shadow mere steps from the man and said, “ENOUGH!” Her voice echoed ominously off the walls of the ally. The thug dropped the girl abruptly and she quickly retreated against the wall. Evelyn was surprised momentarily. She didn’t know she could do that with her voice.

“Who the hell are you? Are you one a them? Are you one a them supers I been seeing on the tv?” The man asked, a nervous yet cocky look on his face. He was holding the knife up, arm extended, ready to engage Evelyn.

“I am Raven,” She said, making the name up on the spot. She looked up at the man, who was several inches taller. ”I am your killer.”

The man laughed, short and loud, and lunged at her with his blade. She quickly disolved into shadows, then emerged from the darkness and pulled his second knife from its hilt. She gave a quick jab to his gut and disolved again. He lunged at her again but she was already gone into the shadows. The moon’s emerald glow revealed the look of nervousness on the man’s face. Evelyn had thrown him off his guard.

The man reached out and grabbed the frightened woman again, holding knife to her neck and drawing a small amount of blood. The woman’s clothes were torn, exposing her body. She looked with tears rolling down her cheeks. The man looked around in a panic and yelled into the emptiness, “I’ll do it! I’ll kill her! I won’ even feel bad!”

Evelyn used her power to cast a deep darkness over the ally. The knife came away from the woman’s neck and the man began to swing wildly at the darkness.

“I can’t see! How are ya doin’ it?” The man yelled into the empty darkness, the panic was obvious as he begged Evelyn, “I’ll walk away, I won’ hurt her, I promise, I won’.”

Evelyn emerged softly from the shadow behind the men, leaned in quickly and said in a whisper, “I know…” as she drove his own blade through the side of his neck.

Blood spurted from the wound onto Evelyn’s face. She pulled it out quickly and drove it deep into the lower back of the man. The knife dropped from his hand and fell to the ground harmlessly. His face was frozen in pain or horror, Evelyn couldn’t tell which. It could have been both. She let the shroud of darkness disappear and the emerald moonlight was suddenly very bright.

The woman was still against the wall, covering herself and gawking in disbelief. Evelyn took both knives and picked the purse up off the ground as the woman tried to stifle a sob.

“Get out of here. Someone might’ve heard that noise and we don’t want them checking in on us.” Evelyn said, tossing the purse hard at the woman.

She stood up and slowly backed away from Evelyn. “I’m not going to hurt you, you idiot. I would have left you for him if that’s what I wanted. Now go!” Evelyn shouted with the newly aquired echo voice before disappearing into a cloud of smoky blackness that shot into the sky.

The woman watched as her savior soared into the night. Then she turned and fled the scene in fear.

Evelyn flew through the cool air. She had just killed a man. She did it to save a woman from being raped. But that didn’t change the fact; she had just killed someone.

She relived the scene six times before she made it home. Her mom’s car was gone; she must still be at her second job. She thought in particular about the terrified look on the man’s face as she drifted into her room and took form. He would never hurt anyone again, and it was because of Evelyn. The blood on her hands was proof of the deed.

Evelyn couldn’t contain her delight as she stepped into the shower to rinse it all away.
