“Hey, Mom,” a little boy said to his mother over breakfast, “I had a dream about a dragon.”
“You did?” his mother asked. “Was it a big green dragon?”
“No,” said the boy, “the dragon was black.”
“Oh,” said his mother. “Was he breathing bright orange flames?”
“No, it was just black.”
“Was he wearing his favorite red shoes?”
“No!” the boy laughed. “It was just black!”
“But what about a brown vest? Was he wearing a brown vest?”
“Noooo,” said the boy. “It was just black.”
“So, no pink tie either?”
“Oh brother.”
“With a purple polka dot top hat?”
“Just blaaack.”
"What about golden hair. Didn’t he have golden hair?"
"Yes, he had golden hair."
"He did?!"
"But it was under his hat. And the hat was black."
“Well," said his mom, "at least it was a sunny yellow day...”
“...and a deep blue sky?”
“No, it was night...in a forest."
“You mean you could only see the whites of his eyes?”
“No! The dragon was black!”
“Oh.”
(These illustrations are completed. Each picture shows what the Mom says. The second to last page just has two eyes. The last "Oh" is on a completely black page.)
