ABOUT THE STORIES

"Sun City Stories" is my retelling of fairy tales such as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Little Mermaid" through a Mexican-American lens. All of the stories have Trans Women as protagonists, and each story is told in a different style. These stories also deal with themes such as living in diaspora, mental illness, and coming of age.

I’m a huge fan of fantasy and fairy tale retellings, and reading Nalo Hopkinson’s "Riding the Red" was the spark that got me interested in writing these stories.

ABOUT ME

My name is Maria Isabel Andazola and I’m a TransLatina from El Paso, Texas. I’ve been writing stories basically my whole life, and I studied creative writing at the University of Texas at Austin with Rolando Hinojosa-Smith.
I’ve dedicated my writing to representing the people whose stories never get told, marginalized people so often forgotten in media. I hope that this book provides that.

I’m a very shy nerd and it’s hard for me to sell myself, but one thing I’m sure of is that I’m a great writer. Being an author has been my dream job since I was five years old and I’ve been working at it ever since then. This is one of my first books, and the other, "Ocotillo", is also a work in progress.

I write about my hometown, El Paso, and what life is like on the border. I write about race and identity and mental illness and trying to find family and home because these are the things that affect me personally and I’ve never seen them all discussed in a single book.

I’m a new author, but I think it’s far past time we get to hear new voices and see new perspectives in literature, especially in a genre so dominated by writers with similar backgrounds and similar approaches to their stories.

WHY INKSHARES

The simple fact of the matter is that me being a Mexican-American Trans Woman and writing about Trans Women of color makes it nearly impossible for mainstream publishers to take an interest in my work. Many believe it’s impossible to market and won’t have the sales it needs in order to be published. Crowdfunding is the best chance I have at getting published.

Please help me achieve my lifelong dream of being a published author, and please help me tell stories about and for the people who are always erased and forgotten.
