Chapter 1

I was born in a small white hospital with the only color in the room being my eyes which were bright blue and the greyish teal curtains covering the small window on the left wall. My mother had a premature birth by a wide margin, having only 6 months and 30 days from when I was conceived to when I was born. The nurse in the room was my mother’s best friend from their town college days where they shared a dorm. My mother gave birth to me relatively painlessly comparatively because I was so small and the nurse wrapped me in a blanket. My mom said to me as soon as she saw me,

“I’ll never let anybody take you from me, for from this day forth you are who I am.” and then she kissed me on the head and handed me back to the nurse.

I have no father because he died of a heart attack merely weeks after impregnating my mother.

I was kidnapped from my mother at the age of 5 and taken to a lab. It smelled like chemicals and cleaning fluid. They ran tests on me. Specifically I remember a lot of beeping and flat-lines. I knew that those beeps and flat-lines were coming from me. I knew that I had died and come back to life somehow before.

The people in the lab made me run and get stronger and then they decided I was ready. Each day, 3 times a day I was injected with a silvery fluid that burned my blood and smelled like wet dog. It was the DNA of a wolf.

One day they didn't give me the fluid. I was relieved and assumed I was done, but they came back for me. They were mad and yelling at somebody, and they gave me the opportunity to escape from the lab. I fled immediately and ran away.

"Hey, where are you going?" a very concerned woman with long red hair and a short stocky figure asked me.

"I'm going to find my mom." I responded. She didn't say anything else and I didn't understand why until many months later. It was because my eyes flashed silver while I was talking to her. I had already begun to change. When I did find my mom they had already gotten to her. The doctors had killed her. She was lying on the floor beaten to death with a baseball bat, my picture was in her arms. I cried and screamed and hugged her but she was already dead. Then, I ran as far from the house as far as I possibly could before collapsing on the ground exhausted from the days events.

I turn to the skies and howl warning the others in my pack to stay alert.

"There is a new smell. Do you smell it? Stay alert- we don't know if it's dangerous. Wren and Gaff, go scope it out while the rest of us stay here ready to fight."

Wren and Gaff run off and I turn to my pack quickly. I shake my ears and head and they get into formation.

"The scent is harmless. Wren and Gaff gave the howl saying we are safe. Everybody move forward. Tonight we must find a den."

Suddenly we hear a howl of pain. It's Wren. Gaff comes running towards us and then collapses. He points his nose towards the trees and then lets out one last breath. I run towards the woods, leading my pack and fleeing from whatever danger is out there.
