REMINISCE

Caleb was enjoying the vibe with his close friends as they celebrated his birthday.  Thirty years old.  A milestone he was spending on the road.  He couldn’t complain; he was finally making his mark in the music business.  His tour mates, God Bless the Child, were more like family really.  He was glad to share the ride with them.

“Caleb, I hope this year is turning out to be all you want and more.  You’re so deserving of it.” Kendalyn raised her glass of ginger ale as she toasted.

“Thank you, Kenda.  It has surpassed what I wanted.  But I know there’s even more to come.”

“Like a good woman to call your own?” Josiah, a few years younger than him, was always looking for Ms. Right.

“That would be a wonderful gift.  I’ve not had time to even meet anyone while on tour.  Unlike yourself, player.” He teased his friend and slapped him playfully on the back.

“I don’t think you’re into finding anyone else since you met Ariadne.” Kendalyn pointed out.

Caleb paused to consider that.  There were plenty of beautiful women in L.A.’s Poetry Lounge.  A small intimate venue where spoken word was the highlight most evenings. They had asked the hotel’s concierge where to find a low-key artsy place to relax and he highly recommended the lounge for its atmosphere, food and drink.

It was perfect.  However, it did remind him of where he met Ariadne for the first time in London.  It was funny that Kenda would bring her up.  They had lost touch over the last year, but it was quite an experience getting to know Ariadne Stiles.  He missed her.

“Caleb Bettis?”

He shook off the memory and turned when he heard his name.  “Yes.  Hey, there.”

“Hi.  I’m a fan of your music and just wanted to stop by and tell you that.”

A tall slender sister with a beautiful smile stood over him. Caleb smoothed his copper red dreadlocks as he nodded with appreciation. “I’m glad you came over to say hello.  We are very grateful to our fans and it’s always cool getting to interact with you all.”

“The pleasure’s all mine.  Are you going to do any spoken word tonight?”

Evangelique, the baby of the crew, began to snap her fingers as if he were already reciting a piece of poetry. “That would be hot.  I know you have some lyrics or something on your phone.  Us writers always do.”

“I could do that.  Who do I talk to?”

Caleb was directed to the M.C. and added his name to the roster for the evening.  He was the only Caucasian male in the room at the moment and he stood out with his locs and pierced nose.  Many loved his style.  Others thought he was a culture vulture.  But how can you steal from a culture that helped raise you?

Los Angeles is a melting pot similar to New York City and no one gave him the side eye.  He pulled up a lyric he wrote some time ago.  He hadn’t thought about it until Kenda brought up Ariadne.  It was a bit much to recite to her back then, but it’s genuinely what he felt in his heart.

Caleb went back to his party and enjoyed the Tuscan chicken flatbread and avocado salad he requested.  It was delectable, he was down to the last bite when the M.C. announced it was his turn to bless the mic.

“Thank you, everyone.  Good evening. I’m Caleb Bettis in the house tonight celebrating my birthday. But if you allow me, I’d like to share my gift with you.  I hope you like it.”

The crowd applauded and waited for him to start.  Caleb pictured Ariadne sitting in the front row.  It put him in the proper mood.

A break from the world that’s trying to break you -

I’ll be that

A calming voice in a place that’s loud -

I’ll be that

All the things you need, I can be that and more.

Never crowding your space, just want to be a place of peace.

A kiss on your head that relieves the stress -

I’ll be that

A dream fulfilled and joy unbound-

I’ll be that

Not a perfect man, but perfect in this space

and time. Want to make you smile for a long while.

A friend who treasures who you are -

I’ll be that

A lover who knows how to take you there -

I’ll be that

Say it’s what you want

Say it’s what you need

Say I can be the one

Say it and believe

A husband to grow old with -

I’ll be that

A partner invested in you -

I’ll be that

A forever kind of love

Baby, I’m already that

The audience clapped loudly, whistled and snapped.  Caleb took a quick humble bow and waved his thanks while exiting the small stage. His fan met him back at the table.

“That was awesome.  I can’t believe you have verses like that.  Not what I’m use to from you, but I loved it.  Thank you.  Enjoy the rest of your birthday.”

“Thank you very much.  Good night.”

After listening to a few other artists, the group of friends decided to call it a night.  Caleb was excited and exhausted; the road could be grueling.  He let himself into his room and plopped down onto the king size bed.  He gladly let his mind wander back to London and his first encounter with Ariadne Stiles.

“Okay, we’re going to go in and sit way in the back.  You never sit up front in a comedy club.” Kendalyn warned Caleb and TreVaughn.

“I did that once back home in New York; man, they got me good,” TreVaughn told them with a laugh.

Caleb went along with the plan and they grabbed seats in the rear of the small venue.  They were settling in when the emcee came out and introduced the first local comic.

He took the mic and greeted the crowd. “Ah, what a good looking crowd.  Just beautiful.  Wait… maybe we should turn up the house lights so I can make sure that’s an accurate statement.”  The crowd barely laughed.  “But what I can see in the dark is this dude with the flaming red hair.  He must think this is Simply’s Red reunion concert!”

Caleb grinned.  He didn’t want to be a spoil-sport so he began to belt out ‘Holding Back the Years’.  The audience loved it.  Back then, nobody really knew who he was in the music business so they applauded his musical skills.  Not wanting to lose the crowd altogether, the comedian moved on.

“That’s how you handle that!” Kendalyn giggled as she squeezed her friend’s arm.

After the set, a group of black young men came up to their table.  Clearly, they were intoxicated.  “What up, brother?  You rocking dreads; are you a Rastafarian?”

Before Caleb could answer, the tallest of the three got up in his face. “Of course he’s not.  He’s just treating it like a hairstyle; mocking its meaning.”

Kendalyn and TreVaughn moved in closer to let the drunkards know Caleb was not alone.

“Why don’t you leave the man alone?  His hair is very beautiful.” They all turned to see who had spoken and Caleb was surprised to see it was a totally gorgeous young lady with a strong British accent. Tall and tan.

“You know I get tired of the likes of him with their cultural appropriation.  It makes me sick.”

The woman tilted her head to the side and looked thoughtful for a moment. “You do know Hindus were the very first people to wear dreadlocks, right?  Also Vikings and Germanic tribes wore them. Open your minds, gentlemen.  Or at least know what you’re talking about.”

They paused and let their mouths drop open.  A few moments later they mumbled something before stumbling away.

“Well, thank you. I didn’t want to get into a debate with them, but I’m glad you came and nipped that in the bud.  I’m Caleb and these are my people; Kendalyn and TreVaughn.”

“Nice to meet you.  Americans I’m assuming?”

“Yes; we’re out here as an opening act for Nehemiah Nix.  The concert is tomorrow if you’d like to be our guest.” Caleb gestured for her to sit down at their table. “I’m sorry, you must be here with someone else.”

“Just a couple of classmates.” She takes a seat.  “I’m Ariadne.  Ariadne Stiles.”

“Nice to meet you, too.” Kendalyn said with a welcoming smile.

“I’ve never heard of Nehemiah Nix.  What type of music does he sing?”

“Gospel.” TreVaughn answered. “Kendalyn and I are part of a Hip Hop Gospel group and my dude here is a powerhouse all by himself.”

“No wonder I’m not familiar with the name.  Gospel is not my thing. But I’d love to hear you sing one of these days.  How long will you be in London?”

“A few days from what we understand.  What are you studying?  Could you take a break and maybe show us around?” Caleb couldn’t believe his boldness.  Not a shy guy by any stretch, but Ariadne was making him feel like he needed to see her again.  As soon as possible.

“I study medicine.  I don’t have any classes tomorrow.  I wouldn’t mind hanging out a bit. We could do the touristy thing if you like, but there are off the beaten path places that would be way more fun.”

“Ariadne, are you okay over here?” One of her girlfriends had noticed her talking to a group of strangers and came over to investigate.

“I’m just fine, Grace.” Ariadne introduced them and told her friend what their plan was for the next day.

“Sounds lovely.  I can’t get away during the day, but we can definitely go out for dinner tomorrow night if Stiles hasn’t worn you out by then.”

Grace joined them for the rest of the comedy set and they all enjoyed each other’s company immensely.  Caleb was beside Ariadne.  They caught each other stealing glances and it was the cutest thing he’d experienced in a long time.  He missed having a special friend and although more than a few miles separated them, Caleb was excited about getting to know this charming med student.

No one was ready to go to their perspective homes so they all took a walk around that section of the city.  Grace, Kendalyn and TreVaughn chatted about the differences between the States and the UK while Caleb and Ariadne hung back and strolled.

“I’m not going to lie, Caleb.  I find you very intriguing.  And I can’t even tell you why.”

“I thought it was just me.”

“What? You don’t usually start talking to random women you meet in a club?” Ariadne was clearly teasing him.

“I definitely don’t.” He laughed. “But there’s just something about your spirit.  And you’re working towards becoming a doctor.  That’s a noble and rewarding calling.”

“I don’t know about it being a calling or whatever, but I have always had an interest in how the body works.  What made you want to become a singer?”

He thought about mornings in church with his adopted parents, Nynah and Baron Bettis.  The most loving interracial couple who had dealt with a lot of flack back in the day for even being together.  They found a church that welcomed them and helped them cultivate their gifts.  There was no looking back.  First they adopted Mahalia as a baby.  Nynah had a time trying to learn how to do a black little girl’s hair, but she was determined to get the hang of it.  When the opportunity came around for them to adopt a red-haired infant who had been abandoned in the sanctuary, Baron was outright questioned about what he knew about raising a white man.  Defiant and confident, he told people he’d raise him to love God and God’s people.  Isn’t that what every parent should be doing anyway?

Once it became clear that little Caleb loved to sing, they put him in the children’s choir.  Mahalia was an extraordinary dancer so she joined that ministry.  Nynah loved to preach and teach and often was called upon to do just that.  Baron was good at audio visual tasks and sound systems and was in charge of keeping the media going for the church. Nynah blossomed and was offered an opportunity to speak on a premier show on a Christian television network.  It only took a few years for the station to offer her her own show.  Baron was proud of his beautiful wife, but if life in the ministry was hard for the average pastor and first lady; it was doubly hard for a woman of God who all of a sudden found herself an overnight sensation.  Even secular TV shows invited her to be their guest because they loved her southern charm and her love for all people.

Caleb was always on his mother’s hip and loved all the bright lights in the studio.  He’d sing whenever he could get together a small audience.  He was clearly meant for stardom Nynah would tell him.  However, that did not prove to be an easy feat.  Caleb was just different.  He had his own style. He had not been fond of his bright red hair as a pre-teen, but when one of his buddies locked his hair, he decided to try it, too.  His parents weren’t crazy about his nose ring, but they let him be who he wanted to be.  They knew his heart and how blessed they were to have such a good son.

Some producers were intrigued by his new look and gave him a listen just because of it.  His sweet voice was soulful in a way not too many artists could pull off.  He was offered a recording deal by a top label.  He was ecstatic.  However, his parents’ marriage had been suffering unbeknownst to him and his big sister and once they announced they were divorcing, he almost lost it.

“A common story unfortunately.  My parents are still together, but there was a time when I wished they weren’t.  All the bickering was maddening.”

“My parents never argued.  I think they grew apart as my mother’s star rose.  It shouldn’t have gone down that way.  But they are very amicable and are always there for me and Mahalia.  They don’t both live in Metro Atlanta anymore so we take a lot of road trips to Charleston, South Carolina.  I sometimes guest star on my mom’s show.  But I really wish our family were back together again.  Thirty years old and I’d still love to see that.”

“Everyone wants their mum and their dad to be happy.  If my parents could find a way, there’s hope for everyone.” Ariadne advised as she squeezed his hand. “I’m a middle child between two boys.  Aristotle is a barrister and Aeneas is a footballer or soccer player as you’d probably say.  They are good brothers to me.  I am a bit closer to Aeneas though.”

“Are you dating anyone?”

“No, I’m currently single.  It’s been a while since I’ve been in a relationship.  School keeps me very busy.  I enjoy dating, but these days it has to be with a purpose to make it worth my time.”

“What exactly does that mean?”

“I don’t really want a boyfriend.  I want to build a family soon after I’m done with university and med school.  As a doctor I’ll be busy, but I don’t want to forego a decent life either.”

“I completely understand.  I’m about to drop my second album and I’m hoping it catapults my career to where I need it to be so one day I can comfortably support a family, too. I do it for The Lord so I know He’ll bless it.”

“Might as well get this out right now.”  Ariadne paused and then turned to look Caleb in the face.  “I don’t believe in God, devils or angels.”

Caleb was stunned.  He knew not everyone was a believer of course, but he had to admit he was very disappointed Ariadne was one of them.  That didn’t make her not worth getting to know, but he had to try and reign in any other attraction he was already feeling for her. “Is there a reason why you don’t believe?”

“My parents are atheists, but allow us to come to our own conclusions about life.  So far, I totally agree with them. I don’t mean to offend you and I’m not knocking your beliefs.  I just don’t share them.”

“Fair enough.” Caleb wasn’t sure what else to say about it; he didn’t want to make her uncomfortable. “Scratch concert tickets.  I’d still like to hang out tomorrow.”

Ariadne glanced down at her watch. “It’s already tomorrow.”  She smiled and waved for Grace to stop. “But I’m down to see you again.  Opposites attract apparently.”

“That they do.” However, Caleb wasn’t sure this attraction was asking for trouble or not. He took her cell phone and placed his number in her contacts. “Call me to let me know you got home safely.”

She nodded as she smiled. “I most certainly will.”

Caleb was tired at the morning rehearsal, but he was also excited.  When Ariadne called, they had spent two hours on the phone.  He didn’t know what is was about her, but he wanted to find out.

TreVaughn was tuning his guitar when he looked up and saw his friend. “So how did it go with that cute girl?”

“Man, where do I begin.  We talked about our families, our goals, her being an atheist.”

“Say what?”

“Good news is she’s not a devil worshipper.”

“Dude, how in the world…?”

“I know, Trey.  But she’s such a beautiful person not just externally.  And we have this undeniable attraction to each other that neither of us can understand.”

“Maybe God wants to use you to help her get to know Him.  I did like her myself so I see how she’s irresistible to you.”

“Perhaps.  But I’m not too worried about it.  We’re both busy so long distance romance probably won’t work anyway.”

“You can make anything work if it’s truly what you want.”

“But should I want this to work?”

The concert was a complete and total success.  Caleb called Ariadne to tell her about it and she was sincerely happy for him.  She offered to treat him to a homemade English dinner as a going away present.  He wanted to accept, but they had to get ready to fly back home to the U.S.  They promised to keep in touch.

Two weeks later, Ariadne began to follow Caleb on Twitter and Instagram.  They had been texting and calling sporadically, but with a connection via social media they could share more of their lives virtually.  They became fond of video chatting and keeping each other up to date on their career progress.

“Today’s final exam was a killer.  I prepared for it, but still did not expect it to be that difficult.”

Caleb was in the studio taking a break.  “You know you’ve got this.  You are so intelligent and passionate; there’s no way you didn’t ace that test.”

“Thank you for your vote of confidence.  And congratulations on your album making its way onto the charts.  A huge accomplishment.”

Caleb had posted the news on Instagram that morning.  He was so content and Ariadne was strangely a huge part of that feeling. If virtual dating was such a thing, they did it pretty well.  One night he even helped her study.  She asked to Facetime while he was recording a new track.  They talked about everything.

“If there is a God, why does he allow so much tragedy to occur in the world?”

“Anne Graham, the daughter of Billy Graham once said that God is deeply saddened by what goes on in the world, but society has told Him to get out of their schools, out of their government and out of their lives.  He’s a perfect gentleman so he doesn’t go where He’s not wanted, but He still has great love for all people.  He just needs them to believe in Him.”

“So it’s his way or the literal highway to hell?”

“He wants what any good human wants.  Peace, compassion, love and understanding of one another.  Sin entered the world and made us choose between a spiritual connection or a worldly connection. People struggle with it every day.  Even Christians.”

“Interesting. Fanciful, but definitely something that’s been a debate for centuries. I try to wrap my head around it, but I just can’t get with it.  Yet, it helps mold the wonderful man you are so I to try to keep digging.”

“Thank you, love.  I appreciate you.”

Mahalia was waiting for her little brother to pick her up at the airport.  She didn’t get to venture out of state much with being so busy with her job and her struggling marriage.  She needed an in-person confab with Caleb who she considered one of her best friends.

“Hey!  I’m so glad you made it safely.  Love you, girl.”  Caleb wrapped his arms around his beautifully full-figured sibling.  “You look wonderful.”

“Your brother in law doesn’t think so.  But we’ll talk about that later. Show me Los Angeles.”

Caleb was pretty much a nomad during those days.  He was doing temporary housing in L.A. as he worked on a collaboration album with other gospel artists and groups. It was for charity, so he didn’t mind it at all.

“Let’s go grab lunch at one of my favorite places.”

They both were used to Atlanta traffic, but that was nothing compared to L.A. Eventually they made it to In-N-Out Burger in Hollywood.

“This is one of your favorite eateries?  As if I didn’t pack on enough pounds.” Mahalia said as the aroma of a good burger invaded her nostrils.

“You’re perfect.  Only a dog likes a bone as Dad used to say.  And what’s this about Wade?”

They ordered their food and settled in to chat.  “Wade thinks I’ve put on too much weight since we got married.”

“It’s been seven years.  You’ve always been shapely.” Caleb sipped on his cola. “Why is he complaining about something so meaningless?”

“I agree I’ve gotten heavier, but I still dance; I’m still healthy.  I’m careful not to get too carried away, but I’m perfectly fine with my curves.  At first he tried to hide it but now he openly lets me know he’s going to strip clubs, watching porn and has innocent chats with women online.  All because he’s less attracted to me physically.  Oh, he’d never cheat, but man, Caleb; this really hurts.”

Caleb shook his head in disgust.  “You know I love Wade, but this is not gonna fly.  You don’t deserve this.”

“I pray and stand for the restoration of my marriage.  But he makes it very difficult.  He pokes fun at me all the time and I’m about ready to clean his clock for him.” Mahalia rolled her eyes and nibbled on a fry.  “I’m almost afraid to mention getting pregnant because that would mean putting on more pounds.”

“I’m sorry things are rough right now. Do you want me to talk to him?”

“No; it’s not necessary. Let’s talk about you.”

“I’m going to be visiting London again. I got an invite to the BRIT Awards.”

“Oh, that’s so hot.  I believe that’s like the Grammy’s here.”

“Pretty much.  I can’t wait.  I’ve been talking to a very special woman who lives over there.  I’m going to ask her to be my plus one. “

“Oh, do tell.”

“Her name is Ariadne Stiles.  She and her siblings were born in London, but her parents are of Jamaican descent.  She’s a medical student.  Very loving.  Very intelligent.”

“Nice.  Do you have a picture of her?”

Caleb opened his phone gallery and pulled up several pictures of Ariadne. “She’s gorgeous, right?”

“She is very pretty.  Do you really like her that much?  Long distance is rough.”

“Sis, that’s not the roughest part.  Ariadne doesn’t believe in God.”

“Now, I wasn’t expecting to hear that.”

“I know.  It’s important, very important; but she’s such a good person I’m hoping that being around me at least opens up a new mindset for her.”

“That’s a lot to take on, Caleb. Are you wanting this to lead to a serious relationship?”

“On some level I already feel like that’s what it is.  It’s a heart thing.  It’s hard to explain.”

“It’s a heart thing that keeps me hopeful that my marriage will turn around.  But they both have free will. I can’t really say much about Ariadne when Wade is acting like there’s no God himself.”

“That’s it.  Let’s blow this burger stand.  I’m going to take you shopping on Rodeo Drive!”

Mahalia stayed in California for five days and Caleb loved every minute of it.  They confided in one another and prayed.  He took her sight-seeing and they even got to catch a Lakers game.  He enjoyed spoiling her.  She had been very vocal about her concerns over Ariadne so he purposely did not introduce them, but he wondered what that said about his own decisions.

Mindful of the time difference, Caleb started a video chat with Ariadne. “Hey, lady.”

“Hey, sir.  How are you?  Everything good?”

“It’s better than good.  I’m coming your way in a few weeks.  Would you like to attend the BRIT Awards with me?”

“Really?  How awesome.  The awards are cool, but not better than getting to see you again.”

Caleb felt himself blushing.  “I feel the same way.  Honestly it’s the only reason I accepted the invitation.  I have a lot going on right now, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have a night on the town with you.”

“I’ll make it worth your while.”

Caleb didn’t want to think of what she really meant by that.  Ariadne definitely had a flirty nature about her, but he had to keep in mind her thoughts would be way more carnal than his own.  He couldn’t deny he desired this woman.  Her dark natural hair; her creamy brown skin.  A man would be foolish not to want to be with her.  “Just knowing you makes it worth my while.”

The weeks flew by and the anticipation of seeing each other had built up to a fever pitch.  It had been six months since the night they’d met at the comedy club.  Conversation was easy between. Even their disagreements were handled respectfully.  Caleb was packing for his trip when Mahalia called.

“Hey, baby bro.  Just about ready to hit the friendly skies?”

“Yes ma’am, I am.  What’s going on with you?”

“Not quite sure.  Wade has been really short with me lately. It’s not about the weight.  There’s something else going on and he won’t talk to me.  I’m truly concerned.”

“Mahalia, you know I don’t mind talking to him. He’s my brother in law and my brother in Christ.  He might think I’m taking sides, but deep down he knows I’m a fair guy.  Maybe he’ll tell me something that can help.”

“Perhaps.  When will you be coming home?”

“Not quite sure yet, but I will make time even if my plan to move back gets delayed.”

“That will be awesome.  Travel mercies to you, C. Love you much.”

While on his way to the airport, Caleb thought about his sister’s marriage woes.  He had written a lyric about his feelings and the future he hoped for with Ariadne.  It wasn’t to share with her necessarily; not yet.  He just wanted it down on paper as he sorted out his emotions.

Once he landed, Caleb called Ariadne to let her know he would be at her place soon.  “Sorry there won’t be a lot of time to hang out before we have to make our way to the awards, but I promise it’ll be a lot of fun.”

“I’m sure it will be.  I just want to lay my eyes on you.”

“I know the feeling.  See you in a bit, love.”

Caleb checked into his hotel and hurriedly showered and dressed. He put his locs up into a bun and changed his mind for the third time about what to wear to the event.  He settled on a white dress shirt with a paisley patterned tuxedo vest. His black slacks were slender cut and his designer leather shoes were a monk style with suede accents.  Not one for getting decked out much, he felt very pleased with his appearance.  He had arranged for a car to take them to the venue, but the driver would have to meet up with him at Ariadne’s due to an emergency. The hotel doorman hailed a cab for him and he was off to see his girl.

He tried to suppress his nervousness.  Caleb prayed things would go as well as they did over the phone and online.  He didn’t take her time lightly; he was very grateful.

He’d barely pressed the bell before Ariadne threw open the door and jumped into his arms.  She felt so good. “Hello, there.”

Ariadne was quiet as she just stared into his green eyes.  She closed the door and then slowly pushed him back against it.  Caleb could feel the heat radiating off her body.  Or was it his?  They met in the middle as they shared their first kiss.  At first the contact was light, but deliberate.  A sampling. Nibbles and gentle bites of his lower lip.

Caleb wrapped his arms around her and found that her evening dress was backless.  He caressed her back as she began to kiss him full on.  They were hungry.  And he knew it was dangerous.  Her tongue found its way between his lips and she was delectable.  Caleb couldn’t get enough of it.  He returned her kiss with a voracity that didn’t even surprise him. He knew how hooked he was on this beautiful woman.

They kissed until they were out of breath.  As they reluctantly parted, Ariande undid the halter top of her dress and let it fall.  Caleb turned beet red, but couldn’t look away.  She was perfection.

“Ariadne, I…”

She placed her finger on his lips and led him all the way into her flat.  The studio apartment was small and cozy, but her day bed was right in the center of the room. A total mess with her clothes, a couple textbooks and a stethoscope piled on top of it.  Ariadne swept everything onto the floor and laid back.  Her desire was clear, but she did not speak it.  She lay quiet letting him make up his own mind.

Knowing something was wrong, but having it feel so undeniably right was something Caleb was well familiar with.  He didn’t want to overthink his next move.  His heart was already set on it.  He slowly took off his vest, shoes and slacks.  Caleb was unbuttoning his shirt when Ariadne pulled him close.  She reached up and undid his bun. Letting his locs fall to his shoulders.  Then she took his face in her hands and began to kiss him deeply all over again.

He moaned aloud as she whispered his name in his ear.  Caleb became one with her and refused to spend that moment chastising himself.  There would be time to get it right.  That was his prayer.

They never made it to the BRIT Awards.

REUNION

“Hey, Baby Doll!”

Mahalia sat up. “Hey, Mama! Where are you?”

“Right now I’m in Chattanooga, but I’m headed your way. I can’t wait to see you, darlin’.”

Mahalia felt all would be better once her mother got there. “Neither can I. Are you on the tour bus?”

“I surely am. You know I hate flying and avoid it whenever I can.

How’s your heart doing?” Nynah asked her oldest child.

“Physically, it’s fine.” Her mother was referring to her recent health scare.

Nynah caught the despair in her tone. “That husband of yours still acting up, huh. You know he’s dealing with more than he lets on right now.

Mahalia couldn’t think what. “I don’t know about that, but I do know he’s shutting everyone out. Not just me, but his folks, too. It’s sad to see.”

“We’ll get all into it when I get there. They’re calling me back. Love you, Mahalia.”

“Love you, too, Mama.”

She was so glad she had the support of her family. Mahalia got up and popped her brother’s CD into the player. With all her marriage troubles, shestill was concerned about Caleb’s happiness. He deserved a good woman.

The only female he ever spoke about with any seriousness was Ariadne the Atheist. What was wrong with the men of her family?

Mahalia was due back to work from her medical leave soon. She really didn’t need all the time off she applied for, but she was hoping to spend more time with Wade. Mahalia skipped to the track her troupe danced to a few months ago. She was keeping up with her exercising and felt ready to try and do a routine. Mahalia was anxious to get back to the familiar now.

Caleb was busy laying tracks in a studio in Nashville. He was satisfied with the progress of his third album and would be talking to some people about the new treatment for his next video. He was trying hard to ignore the negative vibes he sometimes got, but there were days when his frustration was unbearable.

He brushed his locs away from his face so he could read the text he was receiving. It was from Ariadne.

“Will b in the US in a couple weeks. Want 2 c u. Peace, A.”

He had to admit he was excited about her wanting to see him. Ariadne was something else; intelligent and loving of everyone but The Lord. Caleb knew that was a monumental problem. He also had to admit that he still wanted to settle down and start a family. His parents would love to bounce a few grandkids on their laps. Caleb kept prayers going for Mahalia and Wade, but he did want roots of his own, as well.

The engineer tapped the glass, trying to get his attention. Caleb got back to work. After they were done, he called up Mahalia.

“Hey, sis. How are you?”

“I’m hanging in there. What’s happening in your world? I was just thinking about you.”

“Everything’s pretty all right. I was wondering if you’d do me a favor.” Caleb said.

“Well, that depends on what it is.” His sibling teased.

“Do you remember the place in Atlantic Station I was interested in?”

“Yeah, I do. Have you made a decision?”

“I started the purchasing process. I’m needing to settle down and I’m tired of the vagabond experience. I want to be near you and Dad. I’m considering the future. I miss home a lot of the time.”

“I’m happy to hear that! I could use you around for my own selfish reasons. How much longer?”

“Closing’s nearly complete, but if you don’t mind, I’d like for you to go down there and take a look at it again. I’m gonna need help decorating and all that. I trust your taste, plus you know my style better than anyone anyway.”

“Um, that should be a job for your woman,” Mahalia said, jokingly.

“Well, until that happens…”

“I could hook you up with more than decorating ideas, Caleb.”

“Thanks, but no thanks! Besides, I have a friend coming to see me soon. Maybe we can have the place done by then.”

“Which friend is this?”

“It’s been a while since we talked about her. Ariadne.”

Mahalia sucked her teeth. “Trying to save the world again?”

“No, but if The Lord wills it, being around me might just change her mind about things finally.”

“You know I’m the first one wanting to save souls Caleb, but make sure this is what you’re meant to do. Just sounds like a sure fire way to get burned.”

“I’m just taking up my cross and following Him. Besides, she may not be digging me that much in the first place.”

“Now, I don’t believe that. She must be attracted to you or else why would she give you some!”

Caleb laughed. “I guess I just got it like that. Seriously, she’s a friend that I’m attracted to. I’ll deal with one thing at a time.”

“I was getting a little restless anyway. I can take a drive down to

Atlantic Station and take a look at the condo. You know shopping is one of my favorite past times.”

“Thanks a lot, Mahalia. I know Mama will be busy once she gets there, but her input would be cool, too.”

“You sure about that?” Mahalia laughed. “She just may go with country chic.”

“Oh, you know she’s more hip than that. Even though she does look like Mary Hart.”

“Okay!” She giggled. “Any stores in particular?” Mahalia asked.

“Whatever you’re feeling these days is fine.”

“I wish it was this easy with Wade.”

“Give my brother in law a what’s up hug from me. I’ll holla back at you when I’m done letting the agent know you’re coming. He can give you the keys.”

“Bye, C.”

A few hours later Caleb called back to say everything was a go. He’d bought the condominium straight out. Mahalia grabbed the keys to their silver Murano and headed for the parking lot. She was still extra cautious. Her mild heart attack was not what she bargained for and she was a little nervous at times.

Atlantic Station was a community in the midtown section of Atlanta. It wasn’t very far from her gig at Children’s HealthQuest. The trendy development included various shops, restaurants, a movie theater, galleries, etc. It was one of the “in” places to live. Caleb was smart to invest there. She parked and searched for the sales office. Another resident pointed her in the right direction.

“Hello. My brother called ahead to let your office know I was coming to pick up the keys. His name is Caleb Bettis.”

The agent looked puzzled for a moment. “Did you say Caleb Bettis?”

“Yes, my name is Mahalia Searcy. Were you not the one he spoke with?”

“Ms. Searcy…”

“Mrs. Searcy.” Mahalia corrected the man who was rapidly getting on her nerves.

“May I see your identification, please?”

She was still peeved, but glad they were security conscience. “Of course.” Mahalia pulled out her driver’s license for him to inspect.

He smiled apologetically. “It would be my pleasure to walk you up. Follow me, please.”

The whole black sister, white brother thing was something they were used to, but Mahalia just didn’t feel like playing the game. They took the elevator to the top floor. The agent opened the door for her and Mahalia was immediately impressed. Caleb was going to love it there. The view was incredible, as well.

“Thank you for your help. I didn’t catch your name.”

“I’m Vance Reemer. Let me know if there’s anything else we can do for you and Mr. Bettis.”

“We’ll do that. Enjoy your day,” Mahalia told him, as she shook his hand.

She walked throughout the condo and tried to get a feel for what would work best. Caleb wasn’t a flashy man. He just enjoyed quality merchandise with style; it didn’t have to be expensive.

The two bedrooms were roomy. She loved the garden tub and gold fixtures in the master bath. The dining room was separate and large enough for a decent sized dinner party. The living room had wonderful track lighting and the terrace practically spanned the entire length of the space. Mahalia stepped out onto the terrace and breathed deeply. It felt good to be away from the tension at home.

Later Mahalia helped her petite mother up into the Murano. Once they were on the road, she decided to ask Nynah about Caleb’s “friend”.

“So what do you think of this Ariadne person?”

“Why do you say it like that?” Nynah chuckled.

“I’m sure you know why, mother dear.”

“Yeah, I know. But Mahalia you know the great commission is to go out and win souls for the kingdom. If Caleb is moved to get into a relationship with this young lady then it could be the Holy Spirit leading him.”

“I suppose that’s true, but …”

“Are you afraid this girl is gonna change your brother’s mind about

Christ?”

“No. Even though he does seem to be out of love with the recording industry right now.”

“It’s tough, for sure. You know how people talk about my boy. He is who he is. Caleb’s the best.”

“Spoken with no bias at all!’ Mahalia joked. “She’s coming to the States in a week or so. That’s one of the reasons he’s setting up a house here, I believe. He wants to be able to introduce her to the family.”

“Nothing wrong with that, baby doll.”

“You want grandbabies who don’t believe in God?”

“Caleb wouldn’t allow that. It may make for a stressful household, though.” Nynah admitted.

“That’s what I’m talking about. And who says this woman will want to marry a gospel singer anyway? Caleb’s gonna get hurt, Mama.”

“He’s a grown man. He knows what he’s doing.”

“Ha! Grown doesn’t mean you have good sense. Especially those of the male species.” Mahalia pointed out.

“You’re too much!”

“I just got to the condo. You guys did a magnificent job. Bless you!”

Mahalia beamed. “I’m really glad you like it. We had a blast picking out everything.”

“How could I not like it? You hit everything right on the head. The colors, the fabrics, the décor. You should go into designing, for real.”

“I especially like spending other people’s money so you may be on to something. Wanna talk to Mama?”

“In a minute. Mahalia, I’m on my way to pick up Ariadne from the airport.”

“Gee, you just got into town.” Mahalia tried to control her attitude.

“See, there you go already. I love you, sis, but this is something I have to work out. I have feelings for this woman. And just like Daddy stands for Mama and you stand for Wade, why don’t you see my need to see my way into Ariadne’s life and hopefully lead her to salvation?”

“I feel you, Caleb, but look how your association with her has already caused you to stray from God once.” Mahalia pointed out.

“Yeah, but also look how He pulled me back. He’s not leaving me and I’m not leaving Him. That love is stronger than any other, but that doesn’t mean I can’t take a chance on natural love at the same time. Shoot, my ties to Him can only make a natural love even stronger in the long run. How can you argue that?”

“I can’t. I’m just worried about you.”

“Worry ain’t what us Christians do. Or at least we’re not supposed to, right?”

She blew out air. “Right.”

“Besides, you act like the woman’s got two heads…”

“And a head full of snakes?”

“That ain’t even funny!”

Mahalia giggled. “I’ll behave myself when I meet her. I promise. I should be ashamed of myself anyway. It’s not like my world is spinning perfectly on its axis right now either.”

“I’ll check on Wade tonight.” Caleb volunteered to help his sister.

“No, you won’t. Not the first night girlie girl is in town. You might think about Wade tomorrow!”

Caleb laughed himself. “You’re probably right. Okay, put Mama on the line so I can jump into the shower and then hit the road.”

Ariadne was nervous as the plane cruised towards Atlanta. She’d flown a thousand times; that wasn’t the problem. Ariadne knew this trip was very important and long overdue.

She skimmed through a magazine, but really wasn’t interested in it.She laid it on the tray in front of her and pulled out her compact from her purse. Ariadne was so busy with medical school, that she rarely took the time these days to get “girlified”, but somehow she wanted to look her best for Caleb. A man who was a part of her and always would be. Her rich dark skin looked glossy to her. Ariadne powered her face. She became conscious of eyes staring at her.

“You hardly need that stuff. You look marvelous.” The elderly white woman beside her told her.

“Why, thank you. I’m not much for this make up gook, anyway.”

“Oh! And you have a British accent. How delightful.”

Ariadne smiled. “I like your accent, too.”

That was all the opening the woman needed. Ariadne had just made a new friend.

The captain announced it was time to buckle their seatbelts as they prepared to land at Hartsfield Jackson International Airport.

Caleb paced the area as he waited for Ariadne to show up. He was looking at his watch for the hundredth time when he heard his name being called. Caleb looked up and his heart skipped more than a few beats. He tried to maintain his cool by not running. “I’m so glad you made it safely.” He grabbed her and held her tightly. Caleb felt a little silly until he felt Ariadne’s arms embrace him back.

“I’m glad, too. How are you, love?”

“Blessed and highly…I’m doing well. Come on; let’s go get your luggage.”

They held hands as they searched the carousel for her bags. Ariadne let go as she reached for her duffel. “My suitcase is this same color.”

Caleb strolled around and spotted the other bag. He picked it up and motioned for her to follow him.

“Are you hungry? We can get something right quick if you can’t wait until we get to my place.”

“No, I remember you are pretty good in the kitchen. I can wait.”

Mahalia had left Caleb her SUV to use until he figured out what sort of automobile he wanted. He loaded Ariadne’s gear into the back and then helped her in.

“I can’t believe you’re here.”

“You’ve come to visit me in London. It was my turn.”

Caleb had been listening to one of his mother’s sermons for inspiration. He had intended to take the CD out before Ariadne got into the car. It’s not that he was hiding his religion from her; he just didn’t want that to be the first thing they dealt with. He went to remove the disc and Ariadne stopped him. She listened without comment.

“So what’s been going on with you, Ariadne?”

“School is kicking my bum, but I know how to kick back.” She joked.

“You are going to be a wonderful doctor. If I ever got sick, I’d fly all the way to England just to have you treat me.”

She chuckled. “Caleb Bettis, has anyone ever told you you are corny?”

“A time or two. But not when it counts.” He looked into her eyes which were like onyx.

“Oh, ho. Are you starting already, love?”

“I’m not starting anything. I’m just stating fact. You remember.”

“That I do. Yet, this go round, I won’t get the pleasure again, you said.”

“I said and I mean. Ari, we might as well clear the air about that now. I’m celibate. I intend to stay that way until I’m married. If that’s something you can’t get down with, then I can take you to a hotel. All expenses paid. I’d rather you stayed with me, though.”

“Caleb, won’t that be hard for you. No pun intended!”

“Oh, you just don’t know how hard. But I’m a man of my word or at least I try to be. I promised myself that I would honor that commitment. I hope you understand.”

“There are a lot of things about you I do and don’t understand all at once. But I aim to figure it all out.” Ariadne caressed his cheek as he pulled into traffic.

“Keep that up and we’ll be visiting Grady Memorial!”

Caleb and Ariadne chatted non-stop all the way to Atlantic Station. He knew she’d be jet lagged, so he suggested he prepare a couple omelets; something light, but filling. She heartily agreed and went to unpack her belongings in the guest room. Caleb couldn’t help but lick his lips as she strutted off. Ariadne was slender and graceful. Her countenance, her entire demeanor was queenlike to him. Ariadne had told him how children often teased her growing up about her dark skin. Caleb on the other hand loved her skin, her sensuous lips; her sexy hips. He loved her body and her intellect. He particularly loved her new pixie haircut. As they entered the foyer, Caleb glanced at their image as they passed a large ornate mirror his mother had chosen. He admired how beautiful they looked together.

Caleb was done gathering the ingredients and was ready to pour everything onto the griddle when Ariadne joined him.

“I was going to shower but decided that would make me a little too relaxed. Don’t want to fall asleep on you.”

“You can, if you really want to, Ari.”

“I came a long way. I can sleep later. I don’t smell do I?” She teased as she sniffed beneath her arms.

“Come here, let me see.” She slid next to him and he nuzzled her neck with his nose. “You smell divine.”

“Keeping my hands to myself is going to be difficult if you’re going to do things like that.” Ariadne counseled him.

“You’re right. I’m not being fair. I’ll behave since I expect you to.”

“And what’s the purpose of this celibacy again?”

“I’ve always believed sex was intended for marriage only, but I didn’t always act on that belief as you well know. I just don’t want to be a hypocrite. I can’t profess what sayeth The Lord if I’m not willing to do what He says, too.”

“And how do you know that sex is only for marriage?” She probed further.

“I can point out scriptures to you, but basically, God intended for one man and one woman to stay committed to Him and to each other via a union held together by a covenant. A covenant which says what He hath joined together no man can put asunder.”

“But is it really natural for one man and one woman to be together and faithful for the rest of their lives?”

“It’s supernatural. If God didn’t intend to help us keep that commitment, we wouldn’t have made it a three way.”

“Pardon?”

“A marriage is a three way relationship. The husband, the wife and God. The trio has to work together to make it a success.” Caleb explained.

“It all sounds so mystical. Covenants. Enemies. Very interesting to say the least.”

“What do you believe about matrimony?” Caleb wanted to know.

Ariadne considered her answer before speaking. “I do believe that society should have morals. It’s not right for everyone to go chasing behind anyone they take a liking to if they’re already married. But if a marriage isn’t working for whatever reason, two reasonable adults should be able to part ways without fear of fire and brimstone.”

“How can a family survive if people are going to divorce over every little whim? What’s there to hold you to the vows you took if you know you can back out of it with no consequence or so you think? Children would be shuttled back and forth. It’s disruptive.”

Ariadne was thoughtful for a moment. “Yes, children do deserve our protection.”

“Here. Taste this.” Caleb offered her a forkful of Western omelet.

She gently blew on it before taking it into her mouth. “That’s delicious. Do you have any tea?”

“Of course, I’ve got tea.” He smiled. “Hey, you know what I found out? Ariadne is Greek for holy and most sacred.”

“Yeah, I found that out a while ago. How ironic, huh.”

Caleb fixed her a plate and put a kettle on for tea. He stepped over to his sophisticated stereo system and turned it on. Earlier he’d loaded it with old school reggae CDs. He knew Ariadne was very fond of her ancestors’ genre.

“Oh, no. You’ve got Shabba Ranks? You are really trying to impress me now, star.” She laughed.

Ariadne began winding to the music and Caleb thought he was going to lose his mind. What was he thinking having her stay there? As strenuous as their time together may turn out to be, he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“So is there anything in particular you want to do while you’re in Atlanta?”

“This is your city. I’m but a lowly tourist. I’m down for whatever, sweetheart.”

“My mother and my sister are out of town, but I’d like to introduce you to my father and brother in law. Trust me, they’re the easier of the four!”

“I expect your mum to give me the treatment. And your older sister. They’re just watching out for you.”

“Have you been talking to them behind my back?” He chided.

“I’ve seen your mum on the telly. I can only imagine what she thinks about your association with me.”

“Honestly, she’s cool. She believes there are no such things as coincidences. There’s a divine order to everything that happens in our lives.”

Ariadne nodded. “But your sister. I’m sorry; Mahalia is it?”

“She’s a good woman. You two will get along great.” Caleb told her.

“You didn’t say that with as much confidence. Yet if I can handle being a surgeon, I think your sister will be a fair challenge.”

“There’s one way to look at it.” A ballad by Sanchez shuffled up.

Caleb took Ariadne into his arms and they danced slowly to the rhythm. She laced her fingers through his locs. “I’ve come to love red hair, you know.”

“Have you? What else have you come to love?”

She didn’t answer, but kissed his lips and they continued to sway to their own beat.

Caleb was also on his knees praying for answers. He was falling deeper and deeper for Ariadne. He wanted to know if she felt the same. Her affectionate attention would suggest she did, but he couldn’t shake a strange bit of conversation he’d overheard.

They’d had a fun day exploring Bodies; The Exhibition at the Atlanta Civic Center. Ariadne was able to explain a great deal to Caleb. He was so proud of her studying medicine. They drew quite a few stares. Some friendly; others bordering on hostile. Caleb always wondered why attitudes hadn’t changed all that much from when his parents were dating. Sometimes he thought people were more tolerant, but still not accepting. Their loss.

They got back to the condo and Ariadne had thrown together two salads from the fixings in the fridge.

“Are you going to try your brother in law again?”

Caleb put down his fork and searched for his cell phone. “Yeah, thanks for reminding me. I feel bad that I haven’t seen him since I’ve been back. I spoke to him once, but he seemed preoccupied so I cut it short. His God brother has been driving him around, but I still should have made the Murano available to him.”

He dialed the number, but got Wade’s voice mail. “Man, I know he must know Mahalia’s due back in the morning. I wanted to know if he wanted to ride with us.”

Ariadne nodded. “He must. Perhaps he has something planned for her. If he needed us to drive him, I’m sure he would have said so.”

“These days there’s no telling with Wade, but you’re probably right.” He rubbed his scalp.

“How about after dinner I wash your locs for you?”

He smiled. “That’s a nice offer. Thank you.”

“My pleasure. I enjoy doing it.” She answered, before biting her breadstick.

He was thoughtful for a moment. “Do you do that for a lot of people?”

“What are you trying to ask me, Caleb? Do I have a lot of boyfriends?” Ariadne inquired, faking annoyance.

“Well, I wouldn’t have put it that way. I don’t think you’re a player like that.”

“So what do you think?”

“I’m not sure. I try not to jump to conclusions, but I’m not stupid either. We haven’t seen each other in two years. You must have someone. It’s not like we were ever an official couple anyway.”

“True, but with school, I haven’t dedicated a lot of time to any one person. Besides, despite our different views, no one excites me the way you do, Caleb.”

“Wow, I wasn’t expecting to hear you say that.” He admitted.

“And why not? You are loving, talented, sweet; funny. And all kinds of sexy.” Ariadne grinned. “Am I allowed to say that, choirboy?”

“Why you playing?”

“Caleb, I’m being serious. I’ve dated casually, but nothing exclusive. I haven’t wanted anyone else, but I don’t see how we can be together either.”

Caleb knew she had a point, but his faith propelled him forward. “We wouldn’t be the first couple with differences of opinion.”

“No, but your religion is very important to you and I just don’t buy it at all. I’d like to say in time I would, but I’m not going to promise that. It wouldn’t be fair.”

“So why did you come?”

“I had to.”

Caleb waited for her to say more, but she didn’t. They finished their dinner, exchanging glances. He wondered what God was up to bringing Ariadne back into his life just as he was contemplating leaving gospel music.

There had to be a divine reason. They did the dishes together and then Caleb went to the master bath to retrieve his natural hair products. Ariadne read the labels.

“Ah, this will smell wonderful. Let’s do it in the kitchen.”

“Excuse me?” Caleb clowned.

“Your hair. Let’s do your hair in the kitchen. It would be easier with the veggie sprayer.” She laughed, as she swatted him with a towel.

Ariadne insisted upon listening to the new album Caleb had just finished working on.

He leaned over the sink so she could thoroughly rinse his locs. She knew just the right water temperature to use. Caleb could feel his body tense but forced himself to focus on his tracks in an attempt to relax.

Caleb knew she could feel how uptight he was. She leaned in closer once she applied his peppermint herbal shampoo. He could feel her breasts against his back and he thought his manhood would strike against the counter. Why did he agree to let her do this? He asked himself.

Ariadne’s touch was forceful, but soothing all at once. She handled his locs with care.

“I love your shade of red. It really does put you in mind of Mick Hucknall from Simply Red.”

“Yeah, I still get that a lot. Wonder whatever happened to him?”

“No telling. But Caleb, I do have to say, I’m enjoying your vocals. You have a strong voice. I’m even enjoying the occasional rap lyric you’ve thrown in.”

“Now that’s high praise!”

“Please, I love hip hop, but I really wasn’t expecting someone of your persuasion to rock the mic.” Ariadne joked.

“See, I’m full of surprises.”

“That you are.” Her cell phone vibrated and she read the display. “Excuse me.”

Caleb watched as she rushed off to the other room. He really didn’t want to eavesdrop, but couldn’t help but wonder who she had to talk to in private. She just said she wasn’t seeing anyone.

Ariadne hadn’t closed the door all the way. It was hard for him to make out all of what she was saying, but she seemed anxious.

“Is he all right? Is he? Okay, then. No, no. You were right to call; you just gave me a scare is all. Yes, I’m fine. Thank you, Winnie. Give him a hug and a kiss for me. Bye.”

Caleb’s heart sank to his shoes. He had no idea who she was talking about, but she obviously had love for someone.

When Ariadne returned to the room, he tried to pretend as if he hadn’t heard anything. He hoped she would have said something on her own, but she was not forthcoming with any comments. She finished his hair. Caleb thanked her with a kiss. A kiss filled with enough passion to make her forget whoever she was referring to on the phone.

Ariadne kissed him back with equal fervor. After pulling away, she took his face into her hands. She traced his brows, skimmed his nose. She nibbled at his ear.

“I love you, girl.”

“Mmm. Are you sure?” She asked.

“You’re supposed to say you love me, too.”

“Yes, Caleb Bettis. I do have love for you.”

“No, I mean I’m in love with you.” He clarified.

“I know what you mean. I mean the same.” She smiled at him. “Not sure what to do with that love, are you?”

Caleb wanted very much to take her into his bed, but that had gotten him into trouble with her in the past. He wanted things to be right, but with her disbelief, how could he ever get her to wait for marriage if she didn’t understand its sanctity?

She sensed his dilemma and led him to the couch. Ariadne sat him down and laid her head in his lap. She reached over to the coffee table and picked up the remote. She found an old classic movie channel and they settled back and watched the next feature.

They fell asleep entangled on the couch. Caleb woke first and looked at his wrist-watch. They had to get ready to go and get his sister from Hartsfield.

“Hey, Ari. Wake up. We’ve got to get dressed.”

“Is it that time already? I was having a pleasant dream.”

“It must have been good judging by the big old drool stain on my pants!” He teased her.

Ariadne laughed. “Sorry. I guess I got a little too comfortable.”

“I want you to be comfortable with me. Just mop up after yourself.”

Caleb watched as she gathered her things together to take into the guest bath. It took all his restrain not to join her. He decided to divert his attention by giving Wade one last call.

“Hey, man. It’s Caleb. I’m about to head out to the airport to get Mahalia. You never returned my message yesterday, but if you want to hitch a ride with me and my lady, then let me know ASAP.”

Caleb showered and shaved. He put on a navy silk tee shirt and baggy blue jeans. He was lacing up his stark white Nike’s when Ariadne tapped on his door.

“I’m ready.” She announced. Ariadne looked adorable in a sky blue Kate Hudson warm up suit. “Wasn’t sure what to wear. I want to make a good impression with your sister but didn’t want to look as if that’s what I’m doing.”

“Women. Don’t worry, you look adorable.” Caleb grinned slyly.

“There you go again. Getting me hot, but with no promise of relief. Tsk tsk.”

“I’ll have to watch that.” He pecked her nose. “Are you hungry? We’ve got enough time to do a bowl of cereal or something.”

“I’ll just have a bagel and some juice. Can I get you anything?”

“I want some Cocoa Puffs.” He answered.

“That rubbish is no good for your body. I want you around for a long time.” Ariadne searched the cabinets. “Ah, here we go; Wheaties. Breakfast of Champions.”

“Ugh, my mother must have bought those. I’ll guess I’ll eat them since I’m outnumbered.”

They watched CNN as they ate their meal. They discussed politics and other happenings around the world. They had fun with one another, but they also held intelligent debates.

They cleaned up and then headed out the door. The concierge greeted them on their way out the building. Caleb enjoyed living there. He silently wished he could get Ariadne to come live with him.

In the Nissan, Ariadne laughed at the antics of the local radio morning show. “Atlanta’s not bad. Maybe once I’m done with my studies, I’ll consider starting a practice here.”

“You’d really consider that?”

“It’ll be a few more years, but anything’s possible.”

They were both lost in thought most of the way to the airport. They held hands as they searched for Mahalia’s terminal. The flight was delayed, but Caleb and Ariadne browsed the many shops at the world’s busiest airport as they waited. She decided to pick up souvenirs to take back to England for her friends and a few family members.

When they finally met up with Mahalia, she looked tired. “Hey, y’all.”

“Welcome back, big sis. How was the flight?”

“Baby bro.” She greeted him with a hug. “It was fine considering the weather started off funky. That’s why we were delayed.” Mahalia turned to Ariadne. “Hello, sister. I’m glad to finally meet you.” Mahalia held her arms open and Ariadne walked into her embrace.

“I’m glad you had a safe trip. I’ve been hearing so much about you and your family, I feel like I already know you.”

“Yeah, her and Daddy get along great. They didn’t miss an opportunity to dog me out!” Caleb told her. “Let’s go get your bags. I know you’re anxious to get home.”

Mahalia didn’t want to bring her brother and his friend down, so she adjusted her demeanor so they wouldn’t suspect something was wrong. “So Ariadne, how have you been enjoying your stay?”

“It’s been wonderful. I’ve seen some really nice places and of course, I always enjoy Caleb’s company. He’s a good guy.” Ariadne smiled at him.

“Yes, he’s one of the best. And I’d think that even if he wasn’t my brother.” She playfully punched him in the arm. “Do you have any brothers and sisters?”

“I’m a middle child between two boys. My parents are simple folks who enjoy country living. Dad is a small town politician while my mother runs their two shops. Caleb’s met my younger brother. We all hung out the last time he was in London.”

“I’d like to see London. I enjoy Bishop John Francis’ broadcast. It would be great to see it in person,” Mahalia said.

“I know where Ruach Ministries are located. Just let me know when you’d like to come; you’re welcome to stay with me at my flat.”

Both Caleb and Mahalia were a little surprised that Ariadne even knew who she was talking about. “Thanks, I may just take you up on that offer.”

The ride from Hartsfield to Jonesboro wasn’t a very long one. They parked and Caleb helped his sister with her luggage.

She fumbled for her keys. “I’m all thumbs right now.” Mahalia finally got it open and they stepped inside. The place was quiet; she wondered if Wade was even home. “Babe? I’m home. Are you here?”

Caleb locked the door behind them and ushered Ariadne into the living room. Mahalia stopped in the kitchen. Something wasn’t right. She made her way to their bedroom. The bed was made and everything was neatly in place. The bathroom light was on.

Mahalia slowly pushed open the door. It took several seconds for her eyes to adjust to the scene in front of her. Wade was in the tub. The water was an awful crimson color.

“No!” She screamed.

Caleb and Ariadne jumped and then sprang into action. Caleb caught Mahalia just as she was about to touch Wade’s body. “Don’t! Ariadne, call 911.”

“Let me check his pulse, he may still be alive.”

Caleb knew that was wishful thinking, but he stepped aside. He held onto his sister with one hand as he pushed the buttons on his cell with the other. He quickly explained the situation to the operator and gave her the address.

Mahalia knew her husband was gone. She let go of Caleb’s hand. Ariadne checked his neck for a pulse. His wrists were shredded. Ariadne looked into Mahalia’s eyes, conveying the news silently. She wanted to console her new acquaintance, but what could a stranger say that would help?

Ariadne went to Caleb. “Maybe we should give her time alone before the paramedics come?”

“I’m not leaving her.” He was angry. How could Wade do this to her?

He did love his brother in law. Maybe there were signs they all failed to see, but right now all he cared about was Mahalia’s heart.

Mahalia knelt by the side of the tub. She wanted to cover his nakedness, but she instinctively knew the police would need to the scene to remain as undisturbed as possible. They would want to determine it was suicide and not foul play. But Mahalia knew. She knew now that for the past several months Wade had really not been himself. She was fervent in her prayer for him, but she knew for a short time, her resolve had weakened and she needed time away from him. At that moment, Mahalia didn’t know what to think. Her whole world was turned upside down. Her man was dead.

Mahalia touched his face. She gently pressed her lips to his. “I’m sorry, baby. If you told what’s been happening, I would have fought even harder for you. The enemy deceived us both, but I hope you did find true victory before succumbing to this evil trick. You asked me if God forgave all sins and I told you yes. He is not a man and cannot lie. If you gave your life to Him, then nothing can separate you from Him. I love you, but He loves you best.”

Caleb turned his head. Ariadne grabbed onto to him and began to sob. A few minutes later, they heard sirens. Ariadne was glued to his side as they went out to meet the authorities.

Mahalia looked around for a note he might have left behind. She wanted to see it before the police did, but she couldn’t find anything. He’d brought the boom box into the bathroom. He must have been listening to music as he waited for death. She ejected the disc. It was a gospel CD she had burned of all her favorite songs. Another disc sat beside the player. It was all her favorite slow jams from back in the day.

Mahalia turned it over and read the list of songs through watery eyes. She hadn’t listened to it in a long time. Next to The Manhattans “We Never Danced to a Love Song” (she’d mislabeled the title) she saw the words “We should have. But in Heaven we will.”

Mahalia was beat. She greatly appreciated all the love and attention of her family, but she barely had a moment to herself to reflect on how her world had changed. She imagined that was their goal, however, she had to face it sooner as opposed to later. She sat down on the couch besides Caleb and Ariadne. Mahalia smiled at her brother’s friend. In light of everything that was going on, Mahalia was sorry she’d tried to discourage Caleb from pursuing the heart of this very strong young woman.

Caleb wrapped his arms around his sister. Baron held her head from behind. Nynah raised her hands in surrender and was quietly mouthing a prayer.

“I want you to stay at my place. You don’t need to be out here by yourself,” Caleb said.

Ariadne felt uncomfortable for a moment. She knew Nynah was too occupied with family business to be preaching a sermon meant for her. She’d caught the first plane out just to be here with her daughter. Ariadne admired the closeness of the Bettis’ and the Searcys. Her family wasn’t distant with one another but all of a sudden they seemed to lack something essential. She couldn’t wait to excuse herself and call London.

Nynah and Ariadne went off to the bedroom to pack up some of Mahalia’s belongings for her. They didn’t want her to have to deal with what was now called a crime scene.

In no time, Nynah and Ariadne emerged with several bags. They didn’t want Mahalia to have to come back for any immediate needs. They knew they were being unrealistic, but it helped to feel like they were guarding her.

Caleb took the keys from his sister and locked up for her. Mahalia turned to her mother. “Are you staying at Caleb’s, too?”

“No. I’m going with Barry.”

Caleb, Mahalia AND Baron were surprised. Baron quickly recovered.

“Okay, that’s cool. Will you kids be all right?”

“As well as can be expected. Don’t worry. I’ll be fine with Caleb and Ari.”

Ariadne smiled at Mahalia’s use of her nickname. “That she will be.”

More hugs, kisses and tears before they all headed their separate ways. Caleb helped his sibling into the front seat of her vehicle. Before strapping on her seatbelt she turned to Ariadne. “I’m so sorry all this had to happen while you’re visiting. I know you wanted to meet us, but this is a bit much for a newcomer to the clan.”

“Mahalia, please don’t worry about me. This has been an eye opener for me. I’ve taken too much for granted and have been selfish even. Maybe there is something to what your mum prayed after all.”

“You’ll come to find out she’s right about a lot of things.”

As soon as they made it back to Atlantic Station, Mahalia was ready to fall out.

“Big sis, you take my room and I’ll stay out here on the couch.”

She agreed and went off to lie down. Caleb turned his attention back to Ariadne as soon as he heard Mahalia close the door. “I’m sorry about all this, too. I know it was unforeseen, but I still feel bad.”

“Like I told Mahalia, it’s been an experience that’s got me to realize something very important. Caleb, please come and sit down with me. There’s something I should have told you a long time ago. I came here to the States to finally say something or at least to see if the coast was clear for me to tell you. I feel monumentally cruel now to have kept it from you, but…”

“Ari, you’re killing me. Just tell me!”

Ariadne sighed heavily. “You remember the last time we made love, right?”

“Naturally, I do. The last time we made love is the last time I made love. You don’t tend to forget those sorts of things no matter how long it’s been.”

“Well, that night was special in more ways than one. We got pregnant.”

“Um, excuse me?”

“Caleb, I found out I was expecting after you came back to America. I was shocked. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do at first. You know I’ve been talking about being a doctor since I was a little girl; a baby would have delayed things. Plus, we weren’t in a real relationship. We don’t even see eye to eye on the topic that’s most special to you. I was stumped, but as the weeks quickly sped on, I knew I couldn’t go through with a termination. But I also knew I couldn’t go through with raising our son with your…”

“Son? I have a son? Ariadne, I really don’t see how you could have kept this from me for two years! Where is he now? How is he?”

“He’s home with my mum and dad. They love him to pieces and would never let him out of their sight. He’s well taken care of. Trust me.”

“Trusting you is a tall order right about now.” Caleb paced the floor. “I have so many questions, so many emotions. You must have a picture. Let me see him.”

Ariadne retrieved her purse from the kitchen counter. She shuffled through it until she found a small wallet at the bottom. She took his hand and led him back to the couch. Caleb almost pulled his hand away from hers.

“He’s beautiful. Healthy, smart, playful. And look at his hair!”

Caleb took the wallet from her to get a closer look at his child. He had dark red curls and was a gorgeous shade of medium brown. He mostly had Caleb’s features but Ariadne definitely was visible in his handsome face, as well. “How could you look at this boy every day and think it right that I didn’t know about him?”

“Sage.”

“What?”

“His name is Sage. Sage Alexian.”

“What’s his last name?”

“Stiles,” she said as she exhaled.

“Of course.”

“I’m not going to pretend it was fair. It most definitely wasn’t. Not to you and not to our boy. I’m sorry now, but at the time I wasn’t. I sincerely thought it best given the circumstances. You would have wanted him to be raised in your faith. I would have preferred he grow up and then make his own choices. Your career was already in full swing. You would have been a part time parent.”

“Those are a lot of assumptions on your part, Ariadne. My career would have never come before my son. And yes, I would want him growing up knowing there is a God that loves him unconditionally, but at the very least I would have wanted him to know his earthly father does, too.”

“We can determine all those kinds of things later. For now, we need to work on what kind of family we’re going to be. Your folks and Wade’s family have shown me a lot. My small group of relatives are also loving and caring, but it all seems surface. They don’t have that deep down…I’d do anything for you to be whole kinda vibe. It’s hard to explain, but I want Sageto know it for himself.”

Caleb walked over to the terrace. He stared out into the night wondering what his child was doing at that very moment. “Sage is a strong name; I like it. But that middle name; where did it come from?”

“My mother’s Alexa and my Dad’s Ian.”

“No room for my family in there, huh?”

Ariadne was prepared for hostility. She would have been the same way. “We’ll use your family’s names for his little brother or sister.”

“Are you purposely trying to hurt me all over again? You didn’t want a life with me before, why should I trust you want one now?”

She joined him at the terrace door. “I’d never hurt you again, Caleb. Your family has just suffered a terrible loss. I wouldn’t add more pain to that. Maybe Wade’s passing is what’s giving me the courage to tackle this finally. I came primarily to see what kind of feelings still existed between us. If there isn’t any love between us, then we can’t be the best example of it to Sage. I may not believe in God, but I believe in love.”

“Ari, God is love.”

“Okay, so since God is love and you adhere to His Word, does that mean you have room in your heart to genuinely love me?”

“I have always been in love with you. I gave up celibacy for you knowing it would displease The Father. But despite that, I still felt Him urging me towards you. I guess now I understand why.”

“I love you, too Caleb. Sage is the spitting image of you and reminds me daily how special my time with you was. I wanted a part of you around to keep. I just shouldn’t have kept him to myself. We saw you on the telly once. I told him that’s your Daddy. Of course, he’s too little to understand, but I swear the biggest smile came across his face once I said that.”

“I still can’t grip this. Ari, I’m not sure what to do. I believe in doing the honorable thing and would marry you in a second, but we need to weigh what that would mean for each of us. God hates divorce. I’d be in it for the long haul, but I’m not going into it blindly either. That’s assuming you even want to be married let alone to me.”

“Let’s just digest we’re parents together first. I want you to meet Sage. Will you be able to fly to England once you’ve helped Mahalia with the funeral and all?”

“Of course, I’m able. Try and stop me.” Caleb challenged her.

Ariadne ignored the tone in his voice. She tried to stifle a yawn. “It’s been a long day. You must be exhausted, too. Go on to bed, Ari.”

“Am I being dismissed?”

“No, of course not.”

“Are you coming?”

“To bed? With you?” She nodded. “Let’s just digest being parents together first; right?”

“Right. Well, good night.” Ari walked slowly to the guest room. She was hoping Caleb would call her back but he didn’t.

Caleb was tempted to go and wake Mahalia. It wouldn’t be fair to dump this kind of news on her after finding her husband dead less than twenty-four hours ago, but he surely could have used his sister’s advice.

He paced the living room, but his restlessness would not ease. He quietly opened the master bedroom’s door. Although he’d hope she was resting, Caleb was glad to see his sister was wide awake. “Can I come in?”

“Yeah. Please.”

Caleb sat beside her on the bed. “You know you could have come and got me if you needed me.”

“I know, but at the same time I sensed something heavy was going on between you and Ari. I didn’t want to interrupt.”

“Heavy ain’t the word. But more about that in a minute. I’m worried about you, too.”

“I’m not sure how to handle this. I mean, prayer and praise has always gotten me through. I suspect that’s the remedy even now, but honestly I don’t feel like praising right this moment. I know Wade belongs to God and he was only leant to us, but I wanted more time with him. More happy time, not the mess we’d been going through. I’m rejoicing over Wade’s soul being saved, but I’m missing my mate. My friend. What am I going to do? We were one flesh despite the troubles. There’s no way I won’t miss my flesh every day of my life. How do I keep my stability when I feel so cheated?”

Caleb once again wrapped his arms around his sister. He didn’t have the words to ease Mahalia’s pain, but he had a song in his heart. He began to hum a haunting melody that brought new tears to their eyes. The tune was spontaneous, but it felt right to Caleb. It reflected the misery of losing a life and the pain of having missed a wondrous birth.

Mahalia’s body began to sag against his and he could hear her snoring softly. He eased her back onto the pillows. He placed a kiss on her forehead before tipping out the room. His news could wait until the morning.

He walked past Ari’s room and saw that her light was still on. Caleb wanted to go to her, but instinctively knew that it wouldn’t be a good thing. Not until he processed the meaning of his new role.

He plopped down onto the couch. Ari had left the wallet of pictures on the coffee table. Caleb picked it up and went back through the pictures. His boy was stunning. Sage sported a curly fro in some of the photos; in others his hair was braided down. Caleb wanted to know what Sage liked to eat. What did he like to do? Was he a trooper when he got his shots or did he scream down the place? Did he suck his thumb? So many things to learn.

Caleb didn’t often think about who his birth parents were. However, now that he had a child of his own, he wondered how they could have left him and never looked back. Then again, maybe his mother was too young or too selfish like he felt Ari was. Perhaps his father didn’t know about him either.

Who knew if he’d ever get the answers to those questions? But one thing Caleb was certain of was that his child would know his father and his father’s God.

Even more loved ones attended the service held at the church where Wade had gotten saved. The elder women moaned and cried, but Wanda and the younger generation stepped up with kind words and funny anecdotes when summoned by the pastor.

At last, Mahalia walked to the front and stood beside her husband. “I want to thank everyone for coming and celebrating the life of Wade Malcolm Searcy. We all were touched by him in one way or another. Whether it was by his love or frustration at his corny jokes, Wade will always be a part of our lives. Especially mine. He never got the opportunity to see me dance. I know he regretted that so as a farewell gift to him, I’m going to dance to a song my brother, Caleb wrote about Wade. It started off as a sort of lullaby to help me to get to sleep the other night, but now it’s a wish for my husband to slumber in peace until we see him again.”

Caleb took his place at the church piano. The first few notes stunned the crowd. The melody was sorrowful, yet sweet at the same time. Mahalia began to sway and swoop in time with the music as Caleb sang.

“My way was lost and I let You down,

But Your grace and mercy lifted me from the ground

Blessings on my soul from day to day abound

And I thank You, Lord.

My sincerest wish for my life

Is to see a heaven not marred by strife

A petition shared by my praying wife

And I thank You, Lord.

Dangers seen and unseen

You’ve saved me from them all.

But not the way that people think

The writing’s on the wall.

Your Word is true even when we don’t take heed.

Your grace is sufficient and truly all we need.

And I thank You so very much Lord

Just how much I can’t convey

But all my sins were made null and void

So now in peace I lay.”

The Bettis’ were exhausted by the time they got back to Caleb’s. Nynah offered to fix them all something to eat. At first everyone protested, but she refused to take no for an answer. It wasn’t often she got to feed her family. As they were gathered at the table, Caleb asked for everyone’s attention. “I have something very important to tell you guys.”

Mahalia perked up. “I knew you two were hiding something. We could use some good news. Let’s have it.”

Ariadne took Caleb’s hand. “May I?” He nodded and she continued. “Caleb wasn’t the one hiding anything; I was. He just found out about our son, Sage. He’s working on forgiving me for keeping such a secret and I hope one day you can, too. But for right now…” She fished a photo out of her pocket. “This is our child.”

Nynah’s jaw nearly struck the table. Baron recovered first and took the picture from the young woman’s outstretched hand. “My Father in Heaven. Look at him. He’s the spitting image of Caleb. Well, you know. A darker version, but almost like a carbon copy.”

Mahalia got up and went around to her parent’s side of the table. “Here I am thinking you guys were gonna get hitched. You skipped the preliminaries and got straight to the good stuff. Congratulations, Caleb. He’s gorgeous!”

“Thank you.” He turned to his mother. “Well?”

“Wow; I’m a grandmother.” Nynah chuckled. “You are certainly full of surprises, Miss Ariadne.”

“I’m sorry about how this started off, but I’m not sorry I had my boy. I may not share your beliefs, but I know how special Sage is and how I probably don’t deserve him.”

“Hush, child. Of course, you deserve him. God wouldn’t have seen fit to make you his mother if He thought otherwise. Where is he now?”

“He’s home in London. Caleb’s going to come back with me to see him. You all are welcome to come over anytime you want. I know I’ve robbed you of precious months that we can’t get back.”

“No need worrying about that sort of thing. There’s time to talk about it and get over it. Right now, we have a new life to rejoice over.” Baron answered.

“You guys are taking this better than I did. I mean, I was ecstatic to find out about my little boy, but I am totally vexed with Ari. Right now forgiveness from me is a struggle.”

“It’s between you and Ari, but don’t let it stunt the growth of your family. That’s what you are now despite what you two decide to do about your relationship. Don’t take each other for granted. Don’t make anger the undertone of how you conduct your lives with each other.” Mahalia offered wisely. “I know there may not have been love when he was conceived, but…”

“No, you’re wrong. I’ve loved Caleb from the very start. I treated him like a fling because I knew ultimately I wouldn’t fit in his world. But when I found out I was pregnant, I could be a part of his world even if he didn’t know it. Selfish, I realize, but you all are a formidable lot. How can a nonbeliever compete with your notion of God?”

They were all stunned into silence. Mahalia spoke up first. “I can’t imagine how you must have felt, but I also can’t imagine raising a child to believe there is no God. How do you and Caleb plan to resolve that?”

“Oh, he’s going to know there is a God!”

“Caleb, how can you totally disregard my own beliefs? I’m his mother; that’s just as important as you being his father, you know.”

“Calm down. We’ll figure it out. Right now you’ve got to plan how you’re gonna live. Ari, are you willing to relocate to the States?”

She turned to Caleb in frustration. He rubbed her shoulder. “We haven’t figured that out yet, but I was considering setting up a place there so I can get to know Sage. Ariadne’s nearly done with med school, so I wouldn’t ask her to pull up stakes right now.”

“I travel, but England’s a long way to go,” Nynah said.

“Well, until something can be better arranged, I intend to split my time between Atlanta and England. Mahalia, you can live here. I’ll be back and forth, but I’ll also be promoting and touring with the new album eventually.” Caleb explained. “The place is paid for; you wouldn’t have to worry about rent or mortgage once you’re ready to go back to work.

Ariadne’s phone rang. She looked at the display and answered.

“Hello, mum. Yes, I’m okay. I’m here with… our new family. Yes, they are very excited. Is my little man awake? Please put him on the phone so we can all say hi.”

She put the phone on speaker. Everyone began cooing and calling Sage’s name at the same time. He was still too young to talk, but his giggles and hand clapping came across very clearly.

“Hey, Sage. It’s Daddy. I’m coming to see you soon, okay?”

“Mommy misses you, sweetheart!”

Nynah held onto Baron’s hand. She leaned in and whispered. “When He said He’d restore what the locust ate and then some, He wasn’t kidding, huh.”

Baron laughed and kissed his wife on the lips.

Caleb was taken aback after he nearly slapped Ariadne.

She looked at him, but wasn’t surprised nor upset. Naturally, she didn’t want to be stricken, but Ari knew her words would have provoked the anger of even the most devout Christian.

“I won’t apologize for what I said.”

“And I won’t apologize for almost slapping the hell out of you.”

“There is no hell!”

Caleb turned beet red again, but stayed his hand. Although he wasn’t that sorry, he wasn’t an abuser either. “Why are you deliberating testing my patience? You know what I believe…”

“And you know what I believe. My thoughts are just as important and relevant as yours.” She argued.

“I cannot have my child growing up torn between the reality of Christ and the ignorance of atheism.”

“Am I an ignorant woman, Caleb?”

“No, and that’s why for the life of me I don’t see why you don’t understand that there has to be a God. This world didn’t materialize out of thin air. There was intent by the Most High God’s actions when He created everything and everyone in the universe.” Caleb insisted.

“How do you sound? I respect your opinion. I’ve even researched it and I still don’t believe it. If you can’t accept that about me then maybe you need to say goodbye to Sage right now.” Ariadne sadly told him.

“What are you talking about?” Caleb asked, panicked.

“I won’t have him torn either. I shouldn’t have come to you in the States. Ignorance is bliss after all.”

Caleb did realize that he could have passed on to the next life never knowing he’d fathered a son. He did have to admit Ariadne showed her strength by confronting him; knowing a battle was inevitable.

“Jesus! I do love you, Ari. I want you in my life. I most definitely want to help raise Sage. I just don’t know how to get over this. Do you feel the same?”

Ari sighed. “Of course, I do. I’ve brought you across the ocean. I’ve wrestled with my conscience…”

“And where do you think your conscience comes from?” Caleb dared to interject.

“What?”

“Your conscience is the Holy Spirit convicting you.”

Ari sucked her teeth. “So people who don’t believe in God have no instinct or don’t deliberate between what’s right and what’s wrong?”

“We’re just going in circles.” Caleb said, exasperated.

“Let’s ease up on all this for now. I’ve enjoyed having you here, Caleb. I hope to see you often. I mean, I know you’ll come as often as you can for Sage, but…”

“Ari, I’d be just as excited to see you as I would Sage.”

She jokingly rubbed her cheek. “I’m not so sure after that make believe slap!”

Neither realized her younger brother, Aeneas, had entered the room.

“A slap?”

Caleb was momentarily thrown. “Hey, man. How’s my boy?” He stepped up and took the sleeping child from his uncle’s arms. “You’d think an athlete like yourself would have a much heavier step. What’s with sneaking up on us, Aeneas?”

“Sorry to interrupt.” He leaned in close to Ariadne’s ear. “Anything going on I should know about?”

She shook her head no with a smile. “You’ve been around Caleb and I long enough now to know how passionate our conversations get.”

Aeneas didn’t seem totally satisfied with her answer, but he let it drop. “Aristotle wants to take us all out for dinner. A farewell to our fair-skinned brother here.”

“I wish I didn’t have to go back, but I’ve been here for nearly three months. You all have truly made me feel like family. Thank you.”

Ariadne put her arm through his. “You are family, Caleb. Sage will miss you, I can tell. The bond is so natural.”

“I was so happy that he took to me right away. I don’t know how I’ll make out without him now.” He bent down and planted a kiss on Ari’s forehead. “Not sure what I’m gonna do without you either.”

“Okay, mush. I’m outta here. I’ll be at Aristotle’s house. He’s finishing up a meeting with those other stuffy barrister friends of his. The folks will meet us at the restaurant.” Aeneas gave Caleb a pound and his sister a peck and headed off.

“Maybe Sage will have your brother’s athleticism.”

“Aeneas Stiles is a player. And I just don’t mean football.” She laughed. “He’s got a variety of good men to take after, thankfully.”

“That he does. I can’t wait for my parents to meet him.” Caleb said as he bounced the baby on his hip. Sage had woken up briefly when he saw it was his father he’d been passed to. He giggled sleepily and then closed his eyes.

“Let me put him down. I’ll be right back.” Ariadne gingerly took their son from Caleb and carried him to the upper bedroom of her new apartment.

Caleb watched her as she climbed the stairs; enjoying the view immensely. Ari was extremely sexy and his defenses were about to wear down to nothing. He prayed she’d continue to respect his celibacy because he knew turning her down now that they had and even stronger connection would be tortuous. Caleb opted to stay at a hotel while he was in London. Ariadne invited him to live with her just as he’d offered his condo as accommodations. Three months was too long for him to try and be gentlemanly. It had been bad enough when she stayed with him in Atlanta. Plus, an extended stay at her place probably wouldn’t have sat very well with Mr. and Mrs. Stiles. They sincerely liked Caleb, but were very protective of Ariadne, Sage and their sons. It didn’t matter that they were all adults. Caleb was grateful for their stance.

Caleb couldn’t resist the opportunity to watch his son nap peacefully. He went up to the bedroom and found the boy knocked out on top of his bed. He looked around for Ari and realized she was in the bathroom when he heard movement in that direction.

The door was ajar and Caleb could see she’d just finished using the toilet. Ari cleansed herself with one of Sage’s baby wipes. He didn’t want to intrude on her privacy, but Caleb couldn’t pull himself away. It seemed to him that Ari was taking a long time to clean herself. She leaned her head back and sighed as her hand moved in a circular motion between her legs.

“I’m going home just in time.” Caleb thought to himself. He continued to stare through the crack in the door.

“Come here.”

Caleb was startled. Ari still had her head tilted back, but her hand traveled up her stomach and then rested on her right breast. He entered the bathroom. “Ari, you are so beautiful.”

“Caleb, so are you. I respect your desire to remain celibate. I’ve been complying myself because I don’t want anyone else but you. But I have to say my resolve is wearing down. I’ve been so happy with you here with me in London. I don’t know what I’m going to do once you’re gone.”

“I wish I could leave you something to remember.” He smiled coyly. “But, I can’t back down now. We made a child the last time. I’m connected to you. You’re connected with me. It’s not holy matrimony, but we’ve got something we can’t take lightly. I want to do right by Sage and by you. If and when I do have sex…make love; it will be with you. I pray. We have to be married though, Ari. Now, I ain’t proposing to you while you’re sitting on the toilet, but I want you to think about it. I want you also to go to church at your leisure. Listen to Bishop Francis. He’s excellent. Read books. Get tapes. I’ll teach you myself. Hopefully, you’ll come to believe, but at the very least you’ll be educated with the truth.”

Ari wanted to protest, but she loved the man. If this would make him happy; ease his mind, then she would study his religion. If for nothing else, to dispel it once and for all.

“You’re dangerous, Caleb. You’ve got me agreeing to things against my better judgment.”

“It’s a place to start.”

“Would you come over and kiss me at least?”

“Ariadne Stiles; are you trying to trap me? I know you. Once I go over there, you’ll wrap those gorgeous legs around me and pull me in!”

Ari laughed. “You know me too well.”

“That’s a good thing.” He added.

“Would you at least touch me? Right here?” She smiled and pointed downward.

“And what would that accomplish, but make us both crazy?”

“I am crazy. Crazy about you.” Ari said in an exaggerated tone.

“Okay, okay. I’ll stop. Would you open that top drawer there for me, please?”

Caleb reached over and slid open the drawer. He kissed his teeth as he saw a few adult toys spread amongst other accessories. “Are you kidding me, Ari?”

“Can’t have it both ways. I have needs. I’m not going to cheat on you, but if you want it to stay that way, you’re going to have to accept certain things.”

Caleb wasn’t sure if she was trying to play him or was she serious about needing paraphernalia as a sexual outlet. “I don’t need these things.”

“Good for you. I wouldn’t be upset if you did. I’m human, Caleb. So are you.”

“I’m going to check on Sage.”

He stepped back out of the bathroom. Ariadne waited for him to leave before “handling her business.” Caleb could hear the low humming of her instrument of choice. The hum became more insistent after a few moments. Then he could hear Ari’s soft moan as she gave herself the pleasure he would not.

“Lord. Have mercy on Your kid.” He said to himself.

Dinner was delicious. Aristotle had spared no expense. Caleb enjoyed hanging with Aeneas. He didn’t dislike Aristotle, but he was a tougher nut to crack. Mr. and Mrs. Stiles, although more reserved than their younger children, were a joy. Caleb was reluctant to talk about God with them, but he really wanted to know how they could raise their family not to believe in God. Where did all that originate from?

Alexa Stiles bounced her grandson on her knee. “Mum, you can set him down in the high chair.” Ari told her.

“Oh, leave me be, Ariadne. Sage and I are the best of pals. He eats better while on his Grammy’s lap.”

“That’s the same thing Winnie says.” Ari chuckled as she reminded her mother. “She’s the most dedicated sitter in the whole U.K.”

Caleb swallowed before he spoke. “I’d be happy to provide a nanny or something if Winnie needs help.”

“He’s one little boy. Sage gets on great with Winnie and Mum is always nearby. Don’t worry about him.” Ari assured him.

“It’s a man’s job to worry about his son.” Mr. Stiles said. “And his daughter. Caleb, what are your intentions towards our Ariadne?”

He was prepared for the question. “I was not prepared for the news Ariadne came to Atlanta to tell me, but I am more than capable of stepping up to the plate for both Sage and her. I want a family of my own. There are things we need to work out amongst ourselves, but I love Ariadne very much and intend to do my best to make her happy.”

Aristotle laughed good-naturedly. “Good luck there, man. Ariadne’s a sweet girl, but not the one to back down. She’ll give you more than a run for your money.”

Aeneas added. “She’s got back. I trust you, but she’s my sister. Step carefully.”

“I’m not perfect, but I am protected.”

Aristotle and Aeneas both backed away from Caleb’s spiritual reference.

Alexa, an older version of her beautiful daughter spoke up. “I know it’s going to make life more than interesting for you two, but I’m glad your beliefs make you the man Ariadne deserves.”

“Thank you, ma’am. That means a lot to me.”

Ari raised her glass. “To new beginnings.”

“Here, here.” They all said.

After dinner, Caleb had asked Mrs. Stiles to watch Sage while he took a few private moments to be with Ariadne before he had to leave.  She readily agreed and Ari settled into the seat of the luxury car he’d rented from the hotel.

“Are you used to driving on the opposite side of the road yet or do I need to jump out now?”  She loved teasing him.

“Trust me, I learned by trial and error.  You are safe with me, Ari.”

“I know I am, Caleb.”

He followed the GPS until they found the Sussex beach Camber Sands.  He had planned for them to arrive close to sunset so they could sit and enjoy the scene.  Caleb helped her out of the car and they took off towards the water.  “Surprise!”

“I am indeed surprised.  I haven’t been here in a long time.  It’s a beautiful place.”

“How about we play?  I’m a lost sailor and you’re the mermaid that rescues me.  Or we were in a plane crash and are the lone survivors. As a doctor you have to tend to my injuries."

Ariadne laughed softly.  She wasn’t sure if he was serious or not, but she didn’t want to burst his bubble.  “How about we’re two teenagers out on a first date and you’re trying to get to first base.”

“Now first base I could definitely handle.”  He bent down and invited her to jump on his back.  She took off her shoes and let him carry her down the beach.  They walked until they found a private spot for themselves.  He grabbed a nearby beach chair.

“Caleb, I…”

“No, talking.  This is my last night and I just want to show you how much you’ll be missed.” He took her face into his hands and gently kissed her.  First her soft lips; then up to her perfect nose; across to her blushing cheek.  Ariadne began to squirm as he nibbled on her ear lobe.

She positioned herself onto his lap and faced him so she could return his kisses more easily. She was careful not to gyrate her hips, but she could tell he was getting excited nonetheless.  She nuzzled his neck.  “You are so bloody sexy.”

“Not as sexy as you, love.  Do know that I desire you.  A lot.”

“I feel that all the time.  That’s why it’s hard for me physically.  But right now I’m more dedicated to the mental.  We are not the norm, but I think the challenges make us stronger in a sense.”

“I agree.  I’m going to see this through.  Not just because of Sage, but because I feel connected despite us not being equally yoked.  But I said no talking.” He held her close and caressed her back.  He didn’t hold back his moan as she ran her fingers through his locs.  It drove him crazy.

Ariadne could have taken advantage, but she was going to be on her best behavior because he was trusting her to.  She stood up and motioned for him to lay on his stomach.  He obeyed and was treated to a deep muscle massage. “You are so tense in your upper back.”

He thought to himself that’s not where he was really feeling the tension, but he was glad to have his tell-tale sign facing away from her.  Ariadne had a special touch and he knew she would excel at her chosen profession. Her touch had healing qualities indeed.  As she kneaded his lower back he began to feel more relaxed. “I could do this every day.”

“Thank you for bringing me out here.  Between school and Sage, I was definitely in need of some time for me.”

Caleb rolled over and settled her in between his legs.  They fit surprisingly well on that single chair. “I’m going to rack up plenty sky miles coming out here.  It’s worth it.  I want to make you both happy.”

“Even though we fight, I know there’s an uncommon love at the root.  Besides, making up is always fun.”  She smiled as he lifted his hand and kissed the back of it.

They cuddled and watched the sun set.  Before they knew it that had dozed off.  Caleb woke up to find them covered by a blanket of stars.  He didn’t want to disturb her, but he knew he and to get Ariadne back to their son.  He prayed for a solution, but thanked God for what they already had.

REVEALATION

NINE MONTHS LATER

Ariadne could barely focus on what the professor was saying. She was ready to get up and walk out. Her classmate, Maeve, touched her arm.

“Are you all right, Ari?”

“No, I’m not.” She gathered her things and stood up. “I’m sorry, doctor. I’m not feeling well and I need to excuse myself.”

He looked up from his notes. “Sorry to hear that, Miss Stiles. Take care; see you tomorrow then.”

Ariadne was an exceptional student and the doctor knew she would not fabricate a story to get out of class. She was so dedicated, there were times when the professor had to send her away when he could see she was ill.

She jumped into her Mini Cooper and headed for her mother’s shop. Ariadne wasn’t sure what she’d tell her once she got there. She had no idea what had happened herself.

Alexa Stiles was chatting with the owner who’d set up shop to her right. A pleasant woman who noticed Ariadne first.

“Hello, dear. Alexa was just showing me the latest pictures of the baby, although we can hardly call him that anymore.”

“Yes, he is growing like a weed. Mrs. Dobbins, if you don’t mind, I need to speak with Mum privately.”

Alexa looked concerned. “Oh, boy. This can’t be good. We’ll catch up later, Dobbie.”

Mrs. Dobbins smiled and patted Ariadne on the shoulder. “Can we go inside, please?”

“Ari, you’re scaring me. What’s going on? Is it Sage? Caleb?”

She didn’t answer her mother until they were in the office towards the back of the home accessories store. Alexa told her clerks she’d be occupied for a while and that they were only to disturb them if there was an emergency.

Alexa was an attractive woman in a very unassuming way. Ariadne admired her greatly. She hoped she wouldn’t think she was crazy.

“Something strange happened to me last night.”

“Are you sick? You certainly look it right about now.”

Ariadne plopped down into an overstuffed chair. “Sage was a bit fussy, so I decided to read him a story. He and I both were bored with the picture books in his library, so I pulled out the children’s bible Caleb had gotten him with his named inscribed inside. I chose a story randomly. Sage quieted down almost immediately and was so very attentive after I began reading. The story was indeed a good one, but I didn’t think the plot mattered to my two year old.”

“Whenever I moved to put the book away, he’d whine. So I read some more. Finally, Sage drifted off to sleep. We lay side by side on my bed. I really didn’t feel like moving him in case carrying him woke him up. I put on Caleb’s CD and fell asleep myself soon after. I heard a voice. Not a loud booming voice, but a small voice which spoke with authority. Between the bible story and listening to Caleb’s music, I thought I was just dreaming. But it didn’t take long to realize it was not a dream I was experiencing. Mum, I don’t know how to describe it. I felt the hairs on my body rise. My heart beat so strongly, I thought it would burst out of my chest. This voice kept prompting me to believe as Caleb and Sage believe. I was afraid to answer back, but I had to know what it was this person thought Sage believed. He said my son was already a follower of the one and only High God. That my husband has always been and will always be a faithful servant to The Lord. He wants me to join my family and believe in Him, too.”

Alexa stared at her child. “Ari, this all sounds like a dream; a hallucination even. You surely don’t think this voice was Caleb’s so-called God. You know better than that. You are a woman trained and skilled in the art of science, not fantasy.”

“That may be true, but this was no fantasy. I could feel Him. It scared me to death, but I knew He meant me no harm. Just the opposite. He promised me all sorts of gifts and blessings for obeying and trusting His Word.”

“So He was trying to bribe you, heh?” Alexa shook her head, trying not to laugh at Ariadne.

“Not bribes. He told me my belief was not necessary for Him to carry out His will, but my faith would prompt Him to move more mightily in my life. All our lives because that’s what trust in Him does.” Ari persisted.

Alexa saw that her daughter was serious. “You weren’t taking any drugs while Sage was in your care, were you?”

Ariadne didn’t expect her mother to understand, but she refused to be ridiculed. “This is serious, Mum. Very serious. I would not make it up and I certainly don’t indulge in drugs. You know that!”

“Calm down. This just doesn’t make sense and you know it. Caleb’s finally getting to you. You’ve got it bad for that young man. I think he’s wonderful, but this way of life he’s introduced you to will only lead to heartache and disappointment when you find out it’s not real.”

Ariadne looked deeply into her mother’s eyes. “You believed in Him yourself a long time ago.”

Alexa was startled. “What?”

She continued to gaze into the mirrors of her mother’s soul. “You believed until one day He didn’t answer a particular prayer. You felt so slighted that you vowed never to believe in Him again.”

“I’m confused. I never told you that.”

“I know you didn’t. He did.”

Alexa opened her mouth to speak, but couldn’t find the words.

Ariadne paced the room. There was a picture of her maternal grandparents on her mother’s desk. They were from the West Indies. Ariadne knew next to nothing about them. They’d died before she was born. She began to feel that her mother’s abandonment of God had to do with the death of her grandfather.

Alexa’s eyes began to tear as she watched Ari handling the portrait of her parents. “You’re right. I was raised to believe in God. My mother was adamant about worshipping Him. I went along as all children do, but I had doubts and questions. I never developed the sort of faith she had. When my father got ill with cancer, I said I’d give her God a chance to prove Himself to me. I prayed daily for Father to get better, but he got steadily worse. I made a deal with God to save Him. I said I’d become a nun if He wanted me to. But my father died anyway. I yelled at my mother that her God was a fake. She slapped me in the head. I learned not to voice my opinion, but I never changed it. She knew it and part of her never forgave me for it.”

Ari walked over to her mother. “He didn’t call your father home to spite you. He was very ill. God could have saved him, but we all must die one day. Your father had lived a good and full life serving The Lord. He had no regrets about dying. Jehovah welcomed him with open arms.”

Alexa was appalled. “What kind of God takes a young girl’s dreams away? I was my father’s favorite. I loved him dearly.”

“But no one being loves another more than The Creator. He is truly in a better place and you are still his favorite.” Ariadne smiled. She didn’t know what she was talking about, but she knew it to be true.

“Who are you? The Ghost Whisperer now?”

“I don’t know what I am. But I know I’ve been changed.”

Ariadne saw there was no point in continuing the conversation with Alexa right then. There was time for her to understand. Time for them all to understand little bit by little bit. Right then, she needed Caleb.

Caleb was at a tattoo shop in Canada. He’d gone up there to help his friends, God Bless the Child lay down some tracks for a soundtrack they were featured on. He’d made a bet with Josiah and TreVaughn and lost and now he was getting a tattoo. Really he didn’t mind. It was an honor to wear his son’s name on his arm. He toyed with the notion of putting Ari’s name on, too, but Baron had told him never to put a woman’s name on any body part. They were too unpredictable and he might live to regret it!

“So is it hurting yet?” Josiah teased.

“Why don’t you volunteer next and find out.”

TreVaughn laughed. “You’ll be waiting a long time. My brother’s a

USDA chicken when it comes to pain.”

“Actually it’s not that bad.” Caleb told his younger friends. “And Guy is creating a masterpiece.”

Josiah nodded. “It does look good, man. How does it feel being a daddy?”

“It’s the best feeling in the world. I wouldn’t trade it for the world.”

“Think he’s gonna have your voice?” TreVaughn asked as he admired the lettering of Sage’s name.

“I can only hope, but I’m sure he’ll be blessed with talent regardless.”

The artist had finished and was explaining to Caleb how to care for his tattoo when his cell rang. The ring tone signaled Ari was on the other end. “Hey, babe. How’s my family doing?”

“Blessed and highly favored as you always say.”

Caleb thought she was making fun of him, but decided to brush it off.

“Where’s my boy?”

“He’s right here. He’s learning your songs. I play the CDs for him at night.” Ari told him. “Sage is your biggest fan.”

Caleb beamed. “Put him on the phone for me, please.” Ari called their child over so he could talk to his father. “Hey, little man. It’s Daddy.”

The boy giggled and said hi. Despite his limited vocabulary, Caleb and Sage carried on a great conversation. The toddler handed the phone back to his mother. “He looks so much like you. Are you still in Toronto?”

“Yeah, it’s going pretty good. GBTC is phenomenal. I’m grateful to be on the track. Wish you were here. How’s school?”

“Do you really wish I was there?” Ari asked.

“Of course, I do.”

“How long will you be there?”

“At least another week. Why?”

“I want to meet you there.”

Caleb’s brow crinkled. “Is something wrong, Ari?”

“No. It’s too complicated for me to get into now. I just need to see you. Right away.”

“I can come back out there to London. It’s not a problem.”

Ari steadied Sage as he toppled over his toy bike. “No, I’d rather take a trip. I need some time away.”

“Classes getting to you?”

“No. I’m nearly done with them. It’s just that I have news that I can only tell you in person.”

Caleb scanned his brain for ideas. One thing was for sure; Ari wasn’t pregnant! “Why are you being so mysterious?”

“The whole thing is mysterious really.”

“Well, at least tell me if it’s good news.” Caleb urged.

“Would I drag out bad news?” Ari asked with a smile in her voice.

“I don’t know. But in any case, do you have something to write down the name of the hotel I’m staying at?”

Caleb waited as Ari reserved airline tickets online for herself and Sage. They exchanged the necessary information.

“When will you pick up the tour again? The new album’s doing well...” Ari inquired

“There’s time for that. It’s not exactly the same as how secular music’s run… Wanna be my groupie?” Caleb laughed.

“You better not have any others!”

Josiah and TreVaughn signaled they were hungry. Caleb paid the tattoo artist and gave him a pound. “Hey, take a pic of Sage with your camera phone and text it to me. I wanna see if he looks any different from the last time I saw him. Plus, I got to show him off to my boys here.”

Ari was glad to photograph her baby. They had to disconnect for her to take and send the picture, but she called right back once she was done.

“Oh, man. He’s a cute kid, Caleb.” Josiah said as he leaned in.

“Yeah, man. Congrats again.”

Caleb was so proud. TreVaughn and Josiah steered him in the right direction down the street as talking to Ariadne distracted him. Once they got to the restaurant, he told her goodbye. Kendalyn and Evangie were waiting for them in the dining room of a popular Toronto eatery. Kendalyn hugged her good friend. She looked at Caleb’s glowing face. “Now here is a man in love.”

Caleb was restless. He’d just hung up the phone after another marathon conversation with Ariadne. He still didn’t know what was so urgent. He decided to call Mahalia.

“Hey, baby brother. I was just thinking about you.”

“Good things I hope.”

“Yeah; for the most part.” Mahalia joked. “Dana told me how much you liked the song he wrote and you’re gonna try to use it or sell it to another artist for him.”

“That’s a talented brother. I’m glad you’re giving him a chance. He’s a good man.”

“I know he is, Caleb. But the situation is a delicate one. I still mourn Wade.”

“I’m not trying to rush you through the mourning process. Take as much time as you need. You’ll always miss him. I just don’t want you to miss life either. You and Dana vibe. Probably more than you and Wade ever did. Not that I’m minimizing your marriage to him. I loved him. But you and Dana are so well suited for one another. He’ll wait for you.”

“I know he will. That’s one of the things I love about him. Plus, I know I need to get my act together. The spirit of loneliness is clouding my judgment.

“That’s to be expected, but you can’t let that sway you the wrong way. I’m a fine one to talk, but I learned my lesson. I’ve remained celibate and I’m glad. Ari sometimes has a hard time with it, but she’s hanging in there with me. Just remember sis, it doesn’t take much to give in to lust. Let The Spirit lead you.”

“Since Dana accepted the job offer and moved here, we’ve been going out. Sometimes we stay in. Sometimes we attend church together. I hate to keep comparing him to Wade, Caleb.”

“I know, babe. How’s Wanda and them taking it?”

“Well, they don’t really know. Or at least we haven’t officially announced anything. You know he stays with Wanda since they’re step cousins, so I’m sure she suspects something. Sometimes she looks at me funny, but never comments. I think by the time we are ready to say something, they will somehow be use to the idea.” Mahalia said.

“I know they mean a lot to you, but really this is between you, Dana and God.”

“I know. He says the same thing.”

“You’ve spoken to the folks lately?” Caleb asked.

“Daddy’s all packed up. He’s not putting the house on the market though. I think secretly he’s wanting you and Ariadne to raise Sage there.”

“Not a bad idea. You know I wouldn’t take the condo back from you now. Sage is getting so big. That yard would be a cool place for him to do his thing.”

“Ari’s done a good job, Caleb. She and I email each other at least once a week. I sneak her an inspirational devotional every now and again.

Has she changed her mind at all about God?”

“No, not really. It was getting ugly there for a minute. But love conquers all.” Caleb said sarcastically.

“Don’t sound like that. I pray for you all the time. He’s up to something; I know it.”

They talked for a few more minutes and then hung up. Caleb was on pins and needles as he waited for Ari at the airport again. He prayed a hedge of protection around both her and Sage. He knew the angels wouldn’t let him down.

When they finally met up, Caleb felt like crying. They were so beautiful. “My God, how I’ve missed you guys.”

Ari was tearing and didn’t hide it. “We’ve missed you, too.”

Sage was tossed into the air by his father. He laughed loudly, drawing the attention of the other travelers. They all cooed and aahed as they passed by.

“Come on. I need to hail us a cab.” Caleb carried their baggage to the curb. He raised his hand and a taxi pulled up almost immediately.

The couple placed their son snugly between them. They held hands across his lap and watched as Sage began to sleepily nod.

“So are you gonna tell me what brought you all the way to Canada?”

Ari didn’t know where to begin, but she knew she didn’t want to tell her story in the back of the cab. “It can wait until we get to your suite.”

Caleb kissed his teeth, but held his tongue. “Women!” He thought to himself. “Let me show you my tat.” He pulled up his sleeve so she could see it.

“That’s pretty.” Ari said as she fingered it lovingly.

“Pretty? That’s not very manly.” Caleb joked.

“But you are.” She leaned over and kissed his lips. His chin. The tip of his nose.

“Now that’s what I’m talking about. I could use that every day.”

She leaned back and closed her eyes. Caleb didn’t know how close they were to just that.

Once they were at the hotel, Caleb ordered room service. He hadn’t eaten a bite all day in anticipation of their coming.

Sage had caught his second wind and was running around the sitting area. Caleb pulled off Ari’s shoes and rested her feet in his lap. “Okay, I can’t wait a minute longer. What’s up?”

“I’ve been visited by God through His Holy Spirit. He first came to me about two weeks ago. I was scared to death at first, but He hasn’t let me alone since. He’s guaranteed me protection while He guides me in the direction He wants me to go.”

Caleb looked at her as if she’d grown a second head. “This isn’t remotely funny, Ariadne.”

“I’m not trying to be funny. Caleb.”

He was not convinced. “Okay, run this by me one more time.”

She relayed the story of her reading the children’s bible to Sage and playing his music. Ari explained how at first she thought she was dreaming, but soon it became all too real. She told Caleb how she felt God’s presence in the room even then.

“He uses foolish things to confound the world, honey. He intends to use me in all sorts of ways because if an atheist can be moved to follow Christ, then He knows I can easily win over those straddling the fence. Even more atheists may be convinced after my testimony. I’ve written down everything’s He’s told me so far and it’s taken up an entire journal.”

Caleb couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Ari went on to quote various scriptures. She retold bible stories as if she’d been there herself. She explained some things he’d always wondered about both biblically and in his personal life. She went on until the sun came up. Sage had long ago conked out after he was fed. Caleb’s and Ari’s food remained untouched.

He was astonished. Amazed. “Ari, I can’t imagine how you must have felt when this first happened to you. I’m always talking about what an awesome God we serve, but I see now that I had no idea.”

“I can’t believe I’ve been missing out on Him for so long. I’m still scared about what He’s got planned for me. Part of me doesn’t want to participate. Another part is up for the challenge of carrying out His will. I know all I have to do is surrender. And marry you.”

Caleb was working a kink out his neck when he suddenly stopped. “What?”

“God told me I’m to marry you and make our family whole. We’re not to play house. We’re to make vows before Him and carry on His work together.”

“He told you that, huh.”

“Yes. He did.” Ari didn’t blink.

“I have to say, you’re kinda scaring me, too. I trust Him. I know Him. This new Ari is going to take some getting used to!”

“Men. Give them what they want and they’re still not satisfied!”

“There’s my girl.” Caleb laughed.

“I’m nearly done with my schooling. Once I graduate, Sage and I will move wherever you need us to be. I look forward to being your wife, Caleb.”

He pulled her close to him as they stretched out on the couch. “So you’re willing to relocate to the U.S. for me? You want to practice medicine there?”

“If you’re going to be my covenant mate, I have to submit to you. Now you know what that means as well as I do now, so don’t even try to take advantage, mister.”

“No, ma’am. Not me. But seriously; we make decisions together. A real partnership. If I’m to protect and love you for the rest of my life, then I want you to do what it is you need to do for yourself and your career. I’ve got your back. Yes, wives submit to their husbands, but husbands must love their wives like Christ loves the church.  I definitely love you that much.”

Ari reached up and caressed his face. “My mother still doesn’t understand all this. I continue to try and explain it to her. I think she wants to comprehend, though. My father and my brothers think I’m just crazy, but I pray for them.”

“Get ready for the world to hate you because you love Him.”

“I see that already.”

“Wait until my mother finds out!” Caleb said, hardly able to contain his excitement despite his fatigue. “My whole family will be psyched.”

Caleb waited for Ari’s response, but then realized she was snoring softly. He hugged her as she slept. So many thoughts ran through his mind. Caleb was actually getting a headache, but he didn’t mind. “Hallelujah to Your Name, Lord.”

“It’s been good having you around, Dana.”

“Glad to be around, but I know I must be cramping your style. When you gonna get yo’self a huzzbund?”

“Chile, please. I go out but I’m not pressed. Some of these cats ain’t hitting on nothing. And the rest are on the down low. I’m just waiting for whomever God has in store for me. Like Mahalia did.”

Dana stopped. “We haven’t been fooling you, have we?”

“Stop playing. I know and love that girl. At first I was kinda salty. Then when I decided it was none of my business, I finally saw that you two being together is a good thing. Wade died too young. I miss my knuckleheaded twin all the time. But I’m going on with my life. Who am I to say that Mahalia shouldn’t? Besides, we ALL know you’ve been digging her for more than a minute!”

“I promise you, I’ve never disrespected her. I kept my distance when Wade was alive, but he more than likely sensed something. That’s not how I roll. I wouldn’t have gotten in between them, Wanda.”

“I know that, D. Really I do. If I thought you were low down, trust me, you wouldn’t be staying with me, cousin or not.” She moved to the dining room and arranged the place settings.

He reached out and fixed the rhinestone pin she’d attached to the lapel of her white pant suit. “Does the rest of the family feel like you do?”

“You know we talk about it. Most of us feel so sorry for what Mahalia went through even before Wade…Well, you know. I don’t think anyone would begrudge her any happiness. If you guys are wanting to come out the closet I’ll back you up all the way. I know our opinions are important to you both.”

“Very much so and it means the world to me to have your blessing.” Dana hugged his step cousin and finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Mahalia and Ariadne were getting dressed at the condo. Caleb would be coming along soon. The ladies had spent the day shopping for white outfits as he spent father-son time with Sage. They all looked forward to Wanda’s soiree.

“Ari, I have to tell you again how proud I am of you. One step closer to becoming a practicing physician. Think of this party as part of your graduation celebration.”

“Thank you, Mahalia. You have really made me feel part of the family. Not that you didn’t before, but…”

“Girl, hush. Once you have to live with Caleb full time, you’ll wonder why you were thanking me!”

They both laughed. Mahalia often caught herself staring at Ari. The woman looked different. She had a glow that wasn’t there before. When she and Caleb sat her down and discussed what had happened to Ari, Mahalia was flabbergasted. She’d heard of God choosing the least likely to lead the way, but to experience it in her own family was a trip. Baron had been shocked, as well. The only one who’d received the news as if it was the norm was Nynah. But that just figured.

“When the time comes, will you be my matron of honor, Mahalia?”

She was touched. “I’d be honored.”

Ari smiled. “There’s no one on my side that I can ask to be a maid of honor. My family’s coming for the nuptials despite their apparent fear of me, but I don’t have any sisters.”

“Aren’t there any close girlfriends you’d like to ask?”

“I’ve had to let certain people go. God showed me who was for real and who wasn’t. Even the ones who were so called Christian already have turned out to be huge disappointments. But despite that, I have gained a lot of good new friends in their place. It’s just that none are close enough yet to stand up for me and Caleb at our wedding.”

“Planning a wedding is fun.” Mahalia said absently as she began to think about Dana.

“Your guy is a treasure. I liked him straightaway.”

“My guy.” Mahalia repeated.

“You do know it’s all right to proclaim that now, don’t you?”

Mahalia chuckled. “Are you going to be doing that all the time now?”

Ari knew what she meant. “Believe me, I only open my mouth when I’m told to!”

Mahalia looked at the silver charm bracelet Dana had recently given her. He’d given her so much more than material things. He was a good man without a doubt. Dana was making a good impression at CNN. He’d already won over her parents and Caleb. What was she afraid of?

“Fear is not of God, Mahalia.”

She digested what Ari said and then continued to get dressed. Mahaliahad begun a regular work-out regimen again. She enjoyed her curves, but she did want to be more toned. She had to admit she looked fabulous in the white satin blouse that showed just the right amount of cleavage to be still considered decent. She paired it with a white skirt that hugged her nicely. The split on the side accentuated her shapely legs. Dancing had worked miracles on her calves. Her clear high heeled sling backs were also fierce.

Ari looked sharp in a white tuxedo shirt and white slim cut trousers. Her pixie cut was to die for. She’d recently added auburn streaks as a tribute to her red headed men. They were a handsome family indeed.

Mahalia wanted that for herself and Dana. However, something inside her held back because losing a husband was a difficult situation and what would she do if something ever happened to Dana, too? She instinctively knew God would never leave her; He’d helped her endure the most tragic loss. Yet, who wanted to have to live through tragedy even with The Lord’s help?

Caleb let himself in with his spare key. “Okay, ladies. Everyone decent?”

“Yeah, come on in.” Ari walked over and kissed her fiancé. “Did Sage put up a fuss when you left him?”

“Nah, my big boy was fine with his grandparents. They’re gonna spoil him. I can tell it already.”

“You sound envious.” Mahalia kidded.

“You know we had it good growing up, but by no stretch of the imagination were we spoiled.” Caleb whined playfully. “You two look fabulous.” He waited. “Um, that was your cue to say Caleb you look hot, too!”

Ari laughed and winked. “You know how hot I think you are, Mr. Bettis.”

“Do I really need to hear this?” Mahalia pretended to gag.

“Wait until I catch you and Dana being all cozy. Speaking of Dana, I got him another hook up with a female artist needing a song. She likes his style and is anxious to work with him.” Caleb told her.

“What does she look like?”

“Listen at you, Mahalia. I’m telling you to claim that man right away.” Ari teased.

“I don’t even have to it seems. Dana staked his claim a long time ago!”

“That man does love him some Mahalia.” Caleb commented. “Good. I wouldn’t want to have to jack him up.”

“I’m always glad to have my folk around me. Through ups and downs, we keep one another’s confidences and company. I just wanted each of you to know how much you’re loved and appreciated. One thing I learned about myself after Wade passed is that I don’t take nearly enough time out to let my family and friends know how much I love them. So here’s to turning over a new leaf.” She raised her glass.

Her family and friends did likewise. Some of the ladies struggled to hold back tears. The guys gave each other pounds.

After dinner, Dana brought out a cart of desserts. There was an array of mini cakes: Red Velvet, carrot cake, strawberry shortcake, coconut cake and German chocolate cake. They were ordered from Delites by Olivia. A funky new designer bakery in town. Dana noticed many of his CNN colleagues used the spot for parties and other functions. Everyone helped themselves. Caleb brought Ariadne a piece of RedVelvet. “Here. You’ve got to try this.”

“Why is it bloody red?”

He laughed. “Only a doctor would call it that. Trust me, you’ll love it.” He lifted a forkful up to her mouth.

“Mmm,” she said after a moment. “That is delicious. Are you trying to fatten me up? I do want to look good in my wedding gown!”

“You’d look good in a potato sack. I have excellent taste in cakes and women.”

“Just the same, I’ll count my calories,” Ari said as she sampled another piece of cake.

“I’m going to Charleston next month to make an appearance on A Word for All Time. You and Sage are coming with me, right?”

“Oh, yes. I’d love to see Charleston. When I do settle into a resident’s life, I’m going to miss going to all these various places with you.”

“I’m so use to traveling with industry people I think I’ll be lonely now with my wife and son left behind. But I don’t want you delaying your dream just to traipse around the globe with me. When work allows, you can come with me then. I’m very proud to be with a doctor.” He smiled.

“Well, let me know if you ever need a back-up singer. I know all your songs by heart now!” Ari informed him.

“Thanks, babe. But I’ve heard you sing.”

She punched his arm and then ate more cake.

The party went strong for hours before the guests began to tire out. When the only folks left were Caleb, Ari and Mahalia, Wanda let them know she was about to go upstairs for the night.

Caleb rubbed his fiancée’s shoulders. “You ready to go, beautiful?”

She yawned. “I am, but Dana and Mahalia are still over there giving each other googly eyes.”

Dana heard her. “If you’re ready to go, I can take Mahalia home.”

The couple gave him the “sure you’ll take her home” look. Mahalia laughed at them. “Don’t worry, I’ll be fine. I’ve dabbled in kick boxing at the gym. I think I can take him if he steps out of line.”

“Okay. That’s all I needed to hear. Good night, y’all.”

Mahalia and Ari were comparing notes. Now that they all had decided to have one double wedding instead of two, each bride had things they wanted to incorporate into the ceremony. The men stayed out of it, but knew their women cared for and respected one another and cat fights were not a concern. They were holy sisters.

“I like the necklace set you chose for you gown, Mahalia. It’s got that antique look to it.”

“Thanks. My friend, Chloe found it for me. But your dress is sensational. Such a pretty ivory color.” Mahalia told Ari as she went over her to do list.

“Well, I figured since we have a two year old, the stark white gown would be a little hypocritical.”

“Oh, please. You’ve been born again. You are a new creature in Christ. You can wear whatever color you want!”

“I know you’re right, but I like it. My mother, Alexa, found a picture of it in one of her catalogs. She sent it to me here and I had the dressmaker recreate it with a few accents of my own.”

Mahalia put her pad down. “I’m glad your mother and Aeneas are here. It’s a shame Mr. Stiles and Aristotle are so close minded and won’t attend your own wedding.”

“Well, I was just as stubborn as them once. Not that long ago either. It hurts, but one day they’ll come to understand what it is The Lord wants them to know. Despite their lack of knowledge right now, they won’t always be lost.”

“It’s going to be fun doing things together. Just be prepared for people to nag you all the time about Caleb coming to sing.” Mahalia cheerily warned. “They’re relentless, too!”

“I can only imagine.”

Their banter was interrupted by Aeneas entering the family room.

“Don’t mean to bud in ladies, but mum asked me to fetch you, Ariadne. Seems as if little Sage is demonstrating what the terrible two’s are all about.”

“He’s been all riled up with so much company around.” Ari set her things aside and got up. “I’ll be right back. You two get better acquainted.”

Aeneas took his sister’s seat. “All this almost makes me want to settle down myself.”

“You are a handsome man. I’m sure you have plenty women chomping at the bit to get next to you.” Mahalia told him.

“Nice of you to say, but life in professional sports has you guessing sometimes who’s for real and who’s out to get what they can get. It can be a lonely experience.”

“Caleb tells me the same thing about the record business. That’s one of the good things about being married. There is always someone there who is for real, for life.”

“Ah, a man who finds a wife finds a good thing.”

Mahalia raised her eyebrow as he made that biblical reference.  “You’ve been paying attention.”

“Well, my dad and brother are sticks in the mud. We weren’t raised to believe there is a God, but I have my own mind and can draw my own conclusions. How can I do that if I don’t explore all angles? Me and my mum have gone to church a few times since all this has happened to my special Ari. I think dad and Aristotle are just plain scared. She’s got such a powerful spirit and it’s so obviously guided by a much higher power.”

“So you believe now?” Mahalia inquired.

“Honestly, I’m not sure what to believe anymore.”

“At least you question it now. How does Alexa feel?”

“She wants to believe again. I think she thinks she made a huge mistake dismissing it all.”

Mahalia considered his comment. “From what Ari told me, she was brought up going to church. I’ve never understood how someone could say they used to be a Christian. That’s so foreign to me. I’d love to have that conversation with her one day. I enjoy her. She’s a beautiful person.”

“That she is. Speaking of beautiful people; Mahalia, what can you tell me about that beautiful young friend of Caleb’s? What’s her name? Kendi?”

“You mean Kenda? Kendalyn Tripp. And young is the word, Aeneas. She’s barely twenty-one.”

He laughed. “That’s legal age, isn’t it?”

She playfully slapped his knee. “Just watch your step. Caleb is very protective of Kendalyn, her sister and their friends. God Bless The Child has shared the billing with him for the last few years. They’re a lot younger than him but he loves them like family. That’s why they’re here.”

“I’m sorta close with the jokers on my team. But all that testosterone can be overwhelming when everyone wants to show out if you know what I mean.” Aeneas confessed.

“Afraid to show their feminine side, huh.”

Caleb and Dana crossed the room and joined them. “Where’s my wife to be, y’all?”

“She went to go see about Sage. He’s giving mum a hard time. I think he’s just wanting some of the attention you all are getting.” Aeneas offered.

“Spoiled already.”

The guests had all arrived and were waiting for the ceremony to begin. The church was decorated in royal purple and cream. Both brides favored those colors and so did their grooms. They didn’t want an army of bride maids and groomsmen preceding them down the aisle. They just wanted to take their vows amongst their family and friends as gracefully and intimately as they could. These unions held such special meaning to all of them they wanted it to be special beyond measure.

Evangelique Tripp, the singer of GBTC, wrote a special song for the occasion. Formerly an awkward teen, the young woman had grown into her own and was absolutely breathtaking in her purple tea length gown. The first notes from the piano let everyone know they were about to begin.

Nynah tried not to cry as she waited at the altar with Caleb and Dana. She was so in love with her family. She thanked God daily for Baron’s stand which brought them all together the way they should have always been.

Ariadne walked down the aisle first with Aeneas giving her away. Their path was sprinkled with purple and cream silk flowers; the same as her bridal bouquet. Her ivory dress trailed prettily behind her. The lacy bodice was flattering with its pearl accents. The sleeves were capped and flattered her slender arms. Her mother, Alexa seated in the front row failed at her attempt not to cry as she watched her only daughter float by wearing the jewelry her own mother had given her the day she married Ian.

Caleb graciously accepted Ariadne from her brother who’d given her a kiss before presenting her. Caleb was gorgeous in his cream colored, tuxedo. It had a modern cut; not as formal as the traditional style, but classy all the way. At Ari’s request, he wore his locs down around his shoulders. Her every request was his pleasure to grant. Caleb glanced over at Sage who was asleep in Winnie’s arms and was thankful for Ariadne all over again.

Dana strained to see if Mahalia and Baron were at the other end of the aisle yet. Evangie sang a few more lines before father and daughter finally took their place. Mahalia was stunning in a one shouldered off white gown. The satiny fabric hugged her in all the right places and flared at the bottom. Her lusciously thick hair was adorned with a tiara. Dana had given her the amethyst and diamond jewelry she wore like the queen she was. Her bouquet matched Ari’s.

Baron proudly placed Mahalia’s hand in Dana’s and stepped back. Nynah was ready to begin.

“You may all be seated in the presence of The Lord. This is such a blessed day. The Father has really showed up and showed out in the lives of these beautiful young people who I call my children. Let us bow our heads and pray for Him to always keep them in His loving care through whatever comes their way.”

“Heavenly Father, you created this wonderful thing called holy matrimony. May Your grace and mercy sustain them when the world tries to lead them away from what You’d have them to be. May Your covenant with them prove to be stronger with each passing year. May they always remember that love is kind and patient and forgives all things. There is no thing greater than love because You Lord are Love.”

“Caleb Walker Bettis, do you take Ariadne Jewelle Stiles to be your lawfully wedded wife…?”

The guests snapped pictures as the two exchanged their vows. Ariadne was so filled with the Spirit she was having difficulty standing still. She could feel her destiny taking shape and she thanked God for introducing her to it despite her life-long disobedience. When she looked at Caleb, Ariadne saw Christ in him. She knew she was safe and loved and that all the wondrous things to come would be much more so because Caleb shared them with her.

“Do you Dana McCullough Truth take Mahalia Faith Searcy to be your lawfully wedded wife…?”

Mahalia was finally convinced that marrying Dana was her divine purpose. She prayed on it so many times, she wondered if God got tired of her asking Him about it. She had never planned to marry again; Wade and she were supposed to be a forever thing. Mahalia still missed him, but in her imagination, Wade looked down at her from heaven and was happy for her. He would always hold a special place in her heart and memory, but she was ready to give her love and devotion to the one who was such a soul mate to her now. Dana made her feel appreciated and cared for. He was her friend and loved her very essence. She’d been missing that. Mahalia knew love in a whole new way and was grateful to Jesus for saving Dana just for her.

“And now that you’ve exchanged these blessed rings and have vowed to love each other eternally before your God and this company, I now pronounce you husbands and wives!” Nynah happily exclaimed.

The Bettis’ and the Truths kissed one another passionately and then made their way back down the aisle to thunderous applause. Outside the chapel, the couples were greeted with hugs and kisses. Caleb took Sage from Winnie. Their dear family friend offered Ari congratulations as she sniffled and wiped at her tears. Alexa and Aeneas embraced her as soon as the way was clear.

“You are truly beautiful, Ariadne. God bless you both.” Alexa said.

Ari wanted to ask her mother to repeat what she’d said, but the next group of well-wishers had forced their way in.

At the reception, Mahalia, Dana, Caleb and Ariadne feasted on all their favorites before taking over the dance floor. Roasted turkey, glazed ham, baked tilapia, real macaroni and cheese, collard greens, corn bread, candied yams and other delightfully Southern treats.

Both brides had changed into flatter shoes for comfort and were putting their spouses to shame with their fluid moves during their first dance.

“You dance like a white boy, Caleb.” Ari laughed.

“Not when it counts, wife of mine.” He said with his trademark sly grin.

“Why you want to show me up like this, woman?” Dana mocked annoyance.

Mahalia hummed the song they’d chosen. It was the first song Dana had written and was currently climbing the charts for Cira Cane, the artist who’d recorded it. Since then he had penned many others and loved it.

“You know I got the moves, D. If I can’t show them off on our special day, then when can I?” Mahalia asked as she executed a sensuous move. The crowd oohed and aahed.

“See now, don’t be showing off the goods too much. They belong to me at last!”

The cake had been cut; the presents had been opened and the bouquets had been tossed. The women enjoyed having two chances at the coveted prize which declared them the next to be married. The men groaned when it came time to catch the garters, but all in fun.

They all partied until they were about to fall out. Aeneas had monopolized all of Kenda’s time and she didn’t seem to mind. Wanda came with her new man whom everyone liked. Seth, Corbin, Chloe, Bridget, Larabeth and several others had hung tough while the older folks retired after a final offering of congratulations. The cake had been cut; the presents had been opened and the bouquets had been tossed. The women enjoyed having two chances at the coveted prize which declared them the next to be married. The men groaned when it came time to catch the garters, but all in fun.

Wanda pulled Dana and Mahalia to the side. “You look wonderful together. I sincerely wish you all the best. I only hope my thing works out as well as you two.”

“First off, don’t call it a thing, sis. Claim love and receive love.” Mahalia wisely instructed her.

“You’re right. I’m just a little nervous. I haven’t had the best luck in the love game, but I feel that’s about to change. Must be something in the atmosphere.” She embraced them both closely and then went off to find her man.

Caleb skipped over to them. “Dana, wasn’t this the best day of your life?”

“I don’t know what else could even come close.”

“You’re ready to head out?”

“Sure. We’re ready for the honeymoon to begin!”

The flight was long, but once Caleb and Ariadne were finally aboard their Oceania cruise from Barcelona to Athens, they were finally able to relax and let everything set in.  It had been a long time since they had alone time between school, touring, Sage and the wedding planning. But to finally have that time together as husband and wife was something they never thought would successfully happen. But God!

Their cabin was like nothing Ari had ever seen.  She was taking in the magnificent view when Caleb came up and hugged her from behind and planted kisses on the back of her neck.  “Mrs. Bettis, may I have the pleasure?”

“What are you waiting for, my love?”

The love they made was soulful and satisfying.  They were both amazed at how different it felt now that they were so spiritually joined.  They had both repented and forgave each other before they took their vows.  It was truly a new beginning.  A love that stretched beyond belief.

Want to learn the ways that you move

Sensuous; like a smooth jazz groove

Strutting without a thing to prove

There’s like nothing like the real you, baby

Impressive; you know your job well

The boss is shook; that we can tell

Without you, that place would be hell

There’s nothing like the real you, baby

You always know the right thing to say

And you never miss a beat.

Kind in all your ways;

Your lovin’ is so sweet.

Can’t believe my good fortune -

It really blows my mind

There’s nothing like the real you baby

And you know you’re fine

Ready to take the next big step

My ring, I pray you’ll accept

You’re my world; no secrets are kept

There’s nothing like the real you, baby

Take me in your arms now, baby

My precious gift for all time, lady

From your love nothing can sway me.

Real love...

No more searchin’ for a real love

Someone to set my heart free

Real love...

Mary J, I found my all time love.
