Resurget Cineribus, which started as "Dear Monsieur Lafayette", is an idea I have been kicking around in my head for nearly 20 years now. The Red Dwarf has been a Detroit legend for .. well... it’s 2016 now, so about 315 years. There are all sorts of conflicting stories about him, mostly painting him in a negative light. Detroiters have even thrown a parade for the last seven years, burning the guy in effigy. So, I set out to give Detroit an anti-hero. I gave him a name (Claude) and a purpose. Now I am set on telling his story from his point of view. Yes, he’s coarse. Yes, he’ll burn your house down if you irritate him too much. But he’s basically a nice guy. Just watch it with the dwarf jokes.
A little bit about me: I grew up in Detroit’s 80s punk rock scene. We had no fear of our city (probably not our best move..) and would wander any part of Detroit at any time of the day or night. One of our favorite clubs was at 6 Mile and Van Dyke - we never missed a Thursday night. We also knew that it was a neighborhood that the cops would not go to after dark, so we were on our own. We went anyway. On the other hand, we tended to travel in bands and we were more often than not dressed in spiked leather jackets, shredded jeans, and combat boots, and multicolored mohawks or devil locks. So, to the uninitiated we were most likely an intimidating presence. More than once we giggled like schoolgirls when people would clear out of our way as we came down the street looking for all the world like a murder of leather-clad Crows. We were harmless. Really. We were. Mostly.
