Wow; I love the first chapter! It is SO well written, and I am very particular about good writing. If the writing isn’t good, I can’t stay interested. In addition to the great writing, there is tons of mystery. I look forward to reading your other chapters posted here, Matt, and then the book!
I know it’s been awhile since the last update, so I just wanted to drop by to let you know this project is still very much alive and well. I’m a new dad and we just purchased our first home, so needless to say I’ve been pretty busy. But I’ve been busy writing and editing as well! My manuscript for The Last Beacon currently sits at just over 80K words, and I’m working hard on the very last scenes in the book.
In the coming months I’ll be launching my campaign, and I’ll need all the help I can get from you. I’ve been thrilled by the tremendous amount of interest the book has received so far, but I know full well that doesn’t always translate into sales. Anything you can do now to help me drum up even more interest would be so helpful as we enter the home stretch.
With that being said, I’d like to graciously ask for help in the following ways:
Hit the share button on The Last Beacon’s page to tell your Facebook and Twitter followers about this book and why you’re excited for it.
Leave a review so you can recommend The Last Beacon to other Inkshares members who have yet to discover it.
Spend some time reading the sample chapters and highlight one of your favorite passages for your Inkshares followers to see.
Thank you so much in advance. I can’t wait to share this entire story with you, and in the mean time please do check out some of the other great books currently funding on Inkshares like The Seclusion: Part 2, Young Donald, and Mina Harker.
This story is great. The tone and mood are very creepy, and the descriptions are excellent. I’m really excited to read more!
The one issue I have is with the internal dialogue. A lot of the time you just state the character’s thoughts or preferences. I think "show, don’t tell" is a good adage for this. Perhaps you could slip in an implication of a piece of character information and allow the audience to figure it out instead. It’s quite solid as it is, though.
You may have noticed that Beyond the Red Circle is now The Last Beacon. As I’m nearing the end of my first draft, it became clear to me that the latter was a more fitting title for this novel, and when you read the entire thing I hope you’ll see why. Not only does it evoke the lighthouse that is featured so prominently in the opening chapters, but it holds a deeper meaning for several of the characters.
I also wanted to let you know that I’ve completed 19 out of 22 chapters, and have recently uploaded revised versions of the sample chapters already available on Inkshares. The pre-order campaign should launch sometime this summer, so as always I humbly ask if you have a few moments could you please read what I have so far, leave a review on the site, and click the Share button to send to your Twitter and Facebook followers? Thanks so much in advance, and I can’t wait for you to dive deeper into The Last Beacon!
I just wanted to give you a quick update on the state of my manuscript. The first 15 out of a planned 22 chapters are complete and in pretty good shape, and I just recently uploaded revised versions of the first 10 chapters to Inkshares. If all goes according to plan I should have a full first draft on my hands sometime in May.
I plan to begin the pre-order campaign around then, so anything you can do between now and then to help me spread the word would be greatly appreciated. One of my main platforms for promotion will be Twitter, so I invite you to follow me at @mattfarloly and I’ll be sure to follow you back. Right now you can help me expand by audience by sharing a link to my book on social media, or by recommending it on Inkshares to your followers. Any second you can spare, even just reading this update, means so much to me.
Although I’m not uploading any additional chapters, I do want to leave you with something, so here’s a complete list of the tentative chapter titles:
I’ve now shared just under half of this novel on Inkshares, and I don’t think I’ll be posting anymore chapters. The next few to come after these really start to reveal some huge plot points and essential character moments, including the identity of the killer much sooner than you might expect. While I’m even prouder of what comes next, I want to keep that part of the story close to the vest until the complete novel is in your hands.
Like I mentioned last time, if you have the time or inclination to read my work, leave some feedback, recommend it to your followers, or share on social media, I would be forever grateful. Anything you can do to help me get the word out before the pre-order campaign begins would be amazing and I will gladly return the favor.
Thanks again for your support. Happy reading and writing!
I’m here to share some exciting news and to humbly request your help. To kick things off, I’ve recently added two new chapters to Red Circle, which you can read here:
After several chapters spent introducing new characters, these two circle back (pardon the pun) to Dean Orwell and Sarah Matthews, the lighthouse keeper and rookie cop who are at the center of this mystery.
Now for the part where I need your help. I’m approaching the end of this novel (most of it still not shared here), and while there is still a good deal amount of work ahead of me, I would like to start preparing for the inevitable pre-order campaign. Anything you could do to help spread the word about this novel would be appreciated in more ways than I can express. Whether that includes recommending it to your followers, sharing a link on social media, or anything else you can think of, I’d just love to get more eyes on this before we really get started.
Thanks so much in advance, and please don’t hesitate to reach out to me to let me know how I can return the favor.

Hey everyone,
I have another big update this week! Over the past couple of days I’ve added four chapters to Red Circle, which you can read here:
I’ve now shared just under half of this novel on Inkshares, and I don’t think I’ll be posting anymore chapters. The next few to come after these really start to reveal some huge plot points and essential character moments, including the identity of the killer much sooner than you might expect.
