Re: plans for saturday is an existential horror novel of the modern world, set in the not too distant future. Incorporating aspects of social isolation, predation and online privacy, the antagonist is a creature both alien and all too familiar. This concept emerged from discussions had with friends and family who experienced forms of abuse, mistreatment, and general unease while online in a social aspect. People who have used online dating websites, been catfished through social media platforms, or even have just had their identities stolen will find something to relate to in this novel, and those who have not will understand fully what it means to be vulnerable in an incredibly well connected world.
This story is in part inspired by Lovecraftian existential horror, but with a solid understanding of the problems of that genre. This is not a horror story to renew the status quo, but rather to examine its origins and put a needed spin upon it. While the creatures within draw significantly from inspiration by Mieville, Simmons, and Lovecraft, they are made terrifying by their realistic implications.
The story begins with Dr. Aiko Lafayette, a bioengineer and researcher onboard a massive space-station in orbit around Earth, who decides to expand her experiences during a routine visit to Earth. She takes a chance with Steven, a charming young man who helps her to recover from her last relationship, but she soon discovers something about Steven is not as it seems. While he knows a lot about her, including things she does not remember sharing with him, she knows very little about him, especially his wants, needs and desires. She eventually discovers the horrible truth about him and escapes, retreating to her safety in the isolation of the space station. But soon Aiko finds herself wanting to know more about the thing pretending to be Steven, and begins an investigation into not only his dealings, but in numerous other people who have had experiences like her, or worse, have gone missing. Together with a group of individuals determined not to be prey any longer, Dr. Lafayette will hunt down and learn the truth about Steven, and put a stop to its machinations before its plans come to fruition.
