When I was twenty years old I was directionless and depressed. Staying in bed long past waking became a dark, yet comfortable friend which affirmed I was heading nowhere. I had no idea that in two short years I would complete an Ironman distance triathlon that would completely alter the direction of my life. At twenty I had never heard of triathlon. I had yet to find out one decision would introduce me to an entirely new group of positive minded and supportive people that I now call dear friends. I would soon release my uninspired lifestyle, say goodbye to boredom, and wake up energized, looking forward to what my day had in store.
It’s been twenty three years since that first triathlon and I’ve been swimming, biking, running, stretching, strength training, and exercising in general ever since. Trust me, if I, an average everyday athlete with very little swimming, biking, and running background can complete nine Ironman distance triathlons, you can also give yourself a seemingly impossible challenge and elevate your life to new level.
Even more importantly, as a coach for the last seventeen years I’ve developed systems and strategies to help other people live more fulfilling lives, challenge themselves and grow as people increasing their happiness along the way. The majority of people that I’ve coached have been through Team In Training, a fundraising endurance program through The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Most TNT’ers are first timers. I’ve coached a couple thousand people and have observed that on the whole, humans seem to default to the idea they are incapable of achieving new milestones. I can see right passed their self-imposed hurdles and empower them to move through and beyond their limitations so they can grow as athletes and more importantly as people. We are all capable of so much more than we’d allow ourselves to believe.
Here in lies the reason I’ve written this book; the source of inspiration which keeps me coaching year after year. People are indeed capable of more and often they simply need just one person to believe in them strong enough and long enough until they begin to believe in themselves. I use running and triathlon as examples of what is possible and teach the athletes I coach how to apply those lessons to the other parts of their lives so they can soar to new heights.
