Land of the Setting Sun is an alternate history adventure set in and around the fictional nation of Fuso, a nation founded by exiled samurai which spans the western half of North America. When an outlaw gunslinger discovers evidence of a plot by Texas officials to provoke civil war among the samurai, he finds himself in the center of a complex power struggle among rival samurai clans, Comanche bands, yakuza gangs, Texas lawmen, and ninja assassins.
A blend of fantasy, western and samurai epic, Land of the Setting Sun tells a multicultural tale of adventure and political intrigue, set against the backdrop of a re-imagined American West. The novel is intended to be an adventurous yarn in which familiar-yet-disparate archetypes are set on a collision course: samurai and cowboy, ninja and native. But in addition to being an adventure tale, it is also intended to be an exploration of an alternate history in which American manifest destiny was stymied by an external force, determined to halt its westward expansion.
As the author, my hope is to stay true to both western and eastern storytelling traditions from which this novel draws inspiration, while also doing my absolute best to remain respectful of all cultures and ethnicities. I welcome all feedback in regards to both the quality of the storytelling, and to the sensitivity with which these cultures are being depicted. I ask that you please be respectful when offering feedback, and in return I will do everything in my power to ensure that any cultural inaccuracy or insensitivity contained in the novel is immediately addressed and corrected.
