The story starts in New York, recounting the life of an extremely successful Swede-American lawyer, who is considered the best attorney in the world. The blond, young and good-looking fellow enjoys showing off his intellectual might by crushing other people’s ideas and on one occasion he gets into a discussion with a Catholic Priest over God. He demonstrates the inconsistency of religions, ridicules the Priest, and tells his audience that God does not exist. Some weeks later, the man dies of a stroke and when he wakes up, finds himself in Hell.

The lawyer is determined to get out of there, for he simply cannot accept the idea of staying in Hell for the rest of eternity and he concocts a plan.
