Activity: Creation and Destruction

        Categories: Around the House, Artistic.

Nothing lasts forever. Everything eventually gets lost, broken, falls apart, or is simply forgotten. That is just a fact of the world. When it is all said and done, all you have left are your memories of it. Today you are going to embrace the temporary nature of things and have fun with an objects short life.

For this activity your group will create something tangible together, and then you are going to completely destroy it.

The first step is to figure out what it is you are going to make. There are only two requirements you need to fulfill your selection. 1- It must be a material object that everyone in the group contributes to, and 2- You must have a vested interest in it. Cobbling together a flimsy piece of junk that you don't care about because you know it will be destroyed when you are finished is not going to cut it. Find something you will take pride in creating.

Your object of creation can be practically anything: print out a story that you work together to create, build an elaborate sand castle, build a house out of cards, make a collaborative piece of artwork with sidewalk chalk, paint, or clay, make a paper mache model, or just build a simple birdhouse. Look around at the talents of the people in your group and the materials on hand, and you should have no trouble in finding something to create.

After your creation is complete, you will need to destroy it. Destroying your creation isn't as simple as breaking it, taking it apart, and throwing it in the garbage. You aren't just disassembling or deconstructing your creation, you are going to DESTORY it. Do whatever you can to completely obliterate it so that there is nothing left; smash, burn, shred, bash, stomp, break, or beat it. Your destruction should be dynamic enough that you not only see it being destroyed, but hear it as well. Yes, you worked hard in making it, but take just as much joy out of destroying it. Drop it from up high onto the concrete, beat it with a baseball bat, wash it away with a high pressure water hose, fill it with firecrackers, or burn it down to smolders in a fire pit. Be just as creative in your ways of destroying it as you were in the building it. Find the highest point you can possibly drop it from, go to a construction site and ask for assistance in having it run over with a steamroller or ran through a wood shredder, or douse it in accelerant and set it ablaze from a distance. Just make sure that there is nothing recognizable left of it when you are done. And no cheating by making copies of it, or taking pictures; unless the photos are post-destruction.

Be certain to take any safety precautions necessary when destroying your object, and check with any local laws. Have fun with your activity and stay in the moment, because once it is over, all you will have left of your creation will be in your memory; and maybe some Youtube videos.
