Prologue

Cole Hagan looked around, the sunlight blinding him momentarily. He was standing in his old backyard, eight years old, baseball cap on. The intense summer heat making the cilice under his shirt harder to bear than ever. Cole looked up at his house and saw his father looking at him from a window on the top floor, a look of disgust and anger paints his face. Cole knows he’s in trouble, he knows what’ll happen the second he steps foot in the house. However, he starts walking towards the door, his knees moving against his will. The kid begins to panic, his father no longer at the window but waiting for him at the door, belt in hand. Now in reach, his father grabs him by the shirt, causing the cilice to dig into the kid’s chest. Cole starts begging, “Please, dad, I’m sorry, I won’t do it again,” tears streaming down his face onto his father’s wrist. “After this, you bet your ass you’ll never do it again”. He drags Cole into the house. “Daddy, please” As the boy struggles with his father’s grip, trying to free himself, the belt connects with his cheek...
