Captain Sadie and the Treasure of Nantucket
PG. 1
Captain Sadie was a clever pirate who ruled the Southern Oceans * over a century* ago. Her ship, The Comet, was a full rigged ship* and was known to be the fastest in the world.
PG2.
She was famous for commandeering * any foreign ship that sailed into her waters and taking away their gold.
PG3.
Ship Captains in these waters were angry at Captain Sadie and plotted to capture her!
PG.4
One starry night Captain Sadie was high up on the Poopdeck* and spied ships sailing toward the Comet.
PG5.
Suddenly cannonballs began crashing around the Comet sending huge waves splashing onto the deck!
PG6.
Her surprised crew* scurried to hoist the sails, caught fairwinds* and was lucky to escape.
PG7.
Captain Sadie decided she must explore new horizons where no one recognized The Comet and followed the seas * to see where they would take her.
PG8.
After 30 sleeps first mate* Owen spotted an island
PG9.
As Sadie unrolled her map to find their location, a williwaw* blew the Comet onto a shoal*
PG10.
A map showed they were stuck off the coast of Nantucket Island
(show old map of island on this page)
PG11.
The tide* was low and the Comet would be stuck on the shoal until the tide was high again so Captain Sadie and her crew decided to investigate the island.
PG12.
Being careful not to be noticed, the crew climbed up onto the docks, and blended into the crowd.
PG13.
Sadie and her crew slipped into a store which was filled with Nantucket sailors. These sailors where called whalers* and they were sharing a wild tale about a whale they were in search of…
PG14.
The whalers heard that there was giant sperm whale swimming south in the Atlantic* which had a treasure map drawn onto its back. IF the whalers could find the treasure, they would not have ever hunt whales again, and be able to stay on the island with their families.
PG15.
Sadie was determined to find this whale herself and search for the treasure. She and the crew hurried to the wharf, and rowed quickly to the Comet.
PG16.
The high tide lifted the Comet from the shoal, and they sailed south in search of this whale.
PG17.
Sadie had always sailed too fast to pay much attention to whales before. Now she had to slow down and look closely at each whale.
PG18.
Sadie realized she really loved whales!
PG19.
Whales made her smile…and wonder. Some of them where funny, and wanted to play.
PG20.
There were families of whales with calf’s* and she and the crew watched the mammas whales teach the babies to swim and jump.
PG21.
Some whales were enormous and traveled by themselves like kings of the sea.
PG22.
One calm day near the Caribbean* one of these kings gently swam to the ship and rested starboard*
PG23.
The crew gazed down at this giant. Slowly he rolled on his side and stared at them curiously with his big beautiful eye.
PG24.
The whale rolled onto his belly, took a deep breath and blew air out of his blowhole* the strong breath of air blew salty water onto Sadie and everyone laughed! Then they couldn’t believe their luck.
PG25.
This was the whale! on his back was the treasure map!
PG26.
Captain Sadie copied the map and set off to find her new fortune*.
PG27.
It was a lucky day for Sadie. The treasure was close and everything she imagined. Her eyes twinkled at the sight of the red rubies, green emeralds and shiny gold!
PG27.
Then, she thought of the whalers on Nantucket and their hopes of finding this treasure themselves. This treasure of jewels and gold would allow the whalers to stay home with their families and stop hunting whales.
PG28.
Sadie came to love the whales, and knew just what she had to do.
