Synopsis

For some people, weakness is an occasional event. For David Cain, it’s part of his DNA. David will do anything to cure his own disease, but it will take a miracle, and miracles are usually reserved for football players like Jason Bell. But grass isn’t always greener, even on the football field. Jason longs to be given the same respect David takes for granted, being Alexandria High’s star student. As the men grow, in age and bitterness, they try to escape the disappointments of further deferred dreams. Can David or Jason really come out on top, or will one man allow envy to drive him into an early grave?

The Book’s Inspiration

  • From a young age, I used comic books and fantasy novels to escape from my health issues. However, my flair for creative thinking led me to a "creative arts" high school, where I studied writing. The more experience I had writing about myself, the more I shied away from tackling my disabilities, until I came up with a compromise. Rather than go full "Dashboard Confessional", I came up with a rivalry story. What resulted was the foundation for Cane and Able: which balances deeply personal scenes with a thrilling / family drama.
  • I owe a lot to Jodi Picoult, whose courage in tackling childhood cancer and multiple perspectives in My Sister’s Keeper did a lot to shape my novel.
