Plot Synopsis: Every five years, the land of Ravelle is gripped with fear. Four different regions of the country make a heart wrenching sacrifice. That sacrifice comes from their own children. Each region: Calabria, Silar, Belaton, and Nora all send the boys ranging from 13 years to 17 years make the journey to Bodiford, on the edge of the Templar Mountains. Every five years these young men make their trek. It is here that the sacrifice is offered. It is here where the choice is made. One of these boys will be lost—chosen by the dragon. Each boy must make the journey. It is a part of his coming of age. Every five years, they face the terror of the dragon, and the fear of being chosen. And every five years, a family is broken-hearted, losing their son forever. Each region participates, at the request of their king. It is the fear the attack of the dragon on the entire country of Ravelle that drives this terrible choice. And so, the difficult journey is made every five years. At the center of it all is a single priest manages the ritual. This dragon “keeper” makes the journey alongside these boys and manages the ceremony. It is a ceremony of blood and water. Each young man carries with him a special ceremonial shirt, or tunic. Before the ceremony, each boy washes his garb at the spring at Bodiford. He then adds his own blood to the tunic, usually with a cut to the hand, arm, or chest. This blood intermingles with the wet tunic the boys wear—giving each one his own unique blood signature of sorts. The dragon can smell the blood. The dragon can make his choice. The circle of marble at Bodiford is where the boys stand, in lines moving inward toward the center of the circle. Like slices of a human pie they stand, waiting for the dragon to be summoned. The priest then climbs the tower, to the large bronze gong at the top. Here the gong is struck to signal the dragon that the preparations are ready. And every five years the dragon makes his choice. His choice is enigmatic. Does it sense their fear, or bravery? Does it smell something in their blood—a sort of strange ancient familial line? In mystery, the dragon always makes a choice. In terror, the crowd of unchosen boys faces the beast, watching one of their own to be clutched by the talons, and stare as the dragon climbs back up into the air, winging its way into the distant mountains, clutching his victim. However, these boys are not eaten…only taken. Set in the fantastic land of Ravelle, it tells the story of Argon, and his adventure with the “Brotherhood”.
