Chapter one.
The rain washed away the odor of the day leaving the night calm, humid and cold. The streets were empty apart from the few street food sellers sitting in there hammocks out of the rain. The smell of carbon and grilled meat wafted up to me. I was waiting for the signal from my team. This night had been under constant supervision for the last 10 years. Those before me had failed but I was ready to fall to victim to their fate. My masters had prepared me since I could walk for today, and now more than 30 years later I was ready. Tonight was the night of the closing of the the great gate. Every ten years the gate of the palace is opened and the King shows himself to the world before closing himself in for another decade. The time was nearly midnight and I didn’t have another moment to lose. Just then I saw the signal I had been waiting for.
I ran and leapt into the rain my target the adjacent balcony of the building in front. As i landed the rain from my shoulders sprayed on the window in front. In the room were a couple making love on the sofa, completely wrapped up in their activities unaware of my presence. i jumped up to the window ledge and hopped up onto the roof. the extractor fans and antennas were like a minefield in front of me. I weaved my way through and dropped down into the alley behind. sitting huddled in a box smoking crack and completely disconnected was one of the many homeless orphans of the this social war that had been waging for an innumerable amount of time, and which i was determined to put a rest to.
Down here on the street level the smell and the darkness was constricting and suffocating. only someone who had left humanity behind could survive in such conditions. the people that dwelled in this microclimate were often referred to as the roaches or street slime. Horrible bourgeois labels that referred to someone who was simply a byproduct of a society propagated by the wealthy and by pigeon holing these unfortunate souls helped keep the rich and wealthy protected their ivory towers.
"can you give me something" came a voice followed by an open hand from a darkened doorway. "anything, i just need to survive"
I wish I could have helped everyone of them, but i had been trained to ignore these whimpers of suffering and disdain. I also had a mission which i hoped would in the end change their lives and the world for the better.
As i ran toward the capital tower surrounded by its 100 foot wall, dominated by guards, spot lights and humongous screens that pumped propaganda into the night sky. I could hear the music from the other side, those that inhabited the other side knew not and cared not of the suffering of the people that lived in their shadows on the wrong side of the wall. These two were like bacterias, feeding off one another as cancer feed off its host.
I had studied this wall for the last 100 years and knew it well and the head of this poisonous organisation had once been a kind hearted man until he was given the control of the countries funds. for a 100 years he had been building this evil regime, for his own benefit. My job was to cut off his head and end his tyrannical choke on this society. around the edge of the wall were the shanties of the poor and outside the shacks were the bodies of the young and the old, unrecognisable from one another some rotting, some still partially alive, but of all of them were just the wasted lives. rats, dogs, pigs and even other people would feed on the remains. This world had fallen into the bowels of hell, ancient societies had documented similar happenings in the past and for this to happen over and over again, meant only one thing. We were going in the wrong direction.
I knew there was only one way in and that was through the only way nobody would ever enter and which I would rather not have to explore. I climbed through the vent no wider the my shoulders, the wall were coated in a obnoxious slime, and it was damp and filled with creatures feed off of it. I crawled my way through the darkness for much longer than i expected until I arrived at the pool. this was the last section and the hardest bit of the journey. I had to enter in this hot festering pool of human hair, fat, and every other human excrement i cared not to imagine that floated on the surface. Entering this liquid my skin crawled, my stomach twitched and I had to stop my imagination. Years of mental preparation were no match to the reality of my situation. Now i had to swim in this bilge for 10 minutes. I lowered myself in as slow as possible breathing in and compacting air inside me. This was going to be hard, then up to my waist, still breathing, up to my chest, deeper slower breaths, up to my neck, one, two and three. i was in the dark, the cold pushed down on me and the heat rose from under me. i felt as if i was being pushed back to where i had come from. that wasn’t an option for me now. i swam deeper and deeper the cold became colder and that heat disappeared , in the dark shadows of the pool, i could see movement, shimmering lights, phosphorescent creatures which we had been told existed but had never seen. These were biological freaks created in labs part human, part fish and a complete abomination to humanity.
These things they swam close taunting me, like sharks to prey. however my mind was clear and my heartbeat was a slow mummer. i was invisible to these monsters. then i saw the opening in the tunnel, at the far end i saw a small blinking light light a distant star. i entered the tunnel and it started to close in around me. The edges were rough and became narrower and narrower. the light grew, my oxygen depleting little by little. I felt faint, my eyes closed, my mind wandered.
"You’re nearly there, keep focused!" sounded the voice of my elders in my head.
Then I was there. my final destination. As i pulled myself out of the tube my hands slipped on the edge of and I momentarily slipped back in the vile water rushed into my mouth causing me to choke. something grabbed me from under the water and pulled me back.
" you thought we didn’t notice you ghost. We were merely teasing you" said the voice of the pool creature in my head, it spoke to me telepathically.
"we followed you, felt you, experienced you. now we will consume you ghost!"
I cracked the beat between the eyes with my knuckles it grasp weakened and i broke for the surface. swimming as fast as i could i dived out the tube and crashed on the floor. the surface of the pool broke and the faceless head of the pool creature emerged screaming so high pitched the room around me echoed and and the that sound pulled at my skin like pins and needles. then silence.
On all fours I breathed again. The air in this chamber was freezing cold. where was I? This was not on the plans i had. i was supposed to be in a courtyard in front of the shogun palace. i must have got lost when i was pulled back in by the beast. i was not going to go back into that pool, no way.
"The way ahead is full of troubles my son, but in the cold the the silence is loud, follow the silence."
"yes master." i replied in my head.
I knew now what i had to do. i followed the wall around. there was no way out but up or down. I stopped for a moment and sat down and meditated. In the silence i could feel the size of this place. it was a cavernous pit, a well from the past closed and dry the floor was covered in coins. This must have been the old wishing well, that i came to as a young boy. I used to throw in the coins my mother gave me and make a wish every time we came to the capital. Those memories were but a blur, a faded image, like a sun bleached photograph of an old forgotten home.
Then I heard it. the dripping of water it came from above me. drip drip. it landed between my legs drip, drip. this was my opportunity. It was now or never. I lept to my feet and jumped up the wall the a hatch opened above me and water make rushing down into the tube i had crawled out of. I held onto the hatch and climb up and up into a now empty pool. the lights flickered off and a door above me closed. I could hear voices walking away from me. i ran to the door. put my hand on it to check to see if anyone was coming, the light that had been glowing from under the door flicked off and i pushed the door and ran down the hall, from the outside i could hear a key going into the lock i pulled the door and a man came falling in, he was scared to death. i pushed my finger into one of his pressure points just below his right ear and he dropped to the ground and started to snore. I took his key and locked the door behind me. I was here in the capital in front of the shogun palace.
