Hi, My name is Jeff Yang and I am a writer/chef/nerd living in Las Vegas currently. I’ve been writing for almost my entire life but never had the confidence or the time to really sit down and try to materialize my writings into any more than rough drafts and chapters here and there. I feel though with Birthright I finally have an idea I want to expand on and hopefully get into a completely finished novel.
Birthright is about Chase Wilson and Jennifer Chu, two game designers, that work for a game company. They are tasked with creating a new game for the company which is currently failing because of a major project they made previously failed to sell well. Jennifer designs a new character for the game they want to release which they name BETA for the time being. Chase decides to implement a complex algorithm-based AI into the character. BETA soon starts developing signs of sentience and morality and they have to decide what to do with what they have created.
I got this idea from the old games I use to play like Pokemon and Tamagotchis along with the ideas of just MMO’s and game development in general. Playing those games, I wonder if the characters and creatures we took care of in those games could really feel sentient instead of just being things in games that we interacted with. Should we feel responsible for taking care of these things? Should we feel compassion for something that is from a video game or something that you create? Can you truly love something that isn’t technically real?
I will try to update as much as I can and my first chapter should be up within the next couple of days. I would love to hear advice and comments from anyone!
