Beyond the Selfie: Understanding Gen-Y is an offbeat and quirky book that will make you laugh, and sometimes cry, while learning about why young people are the way they are.

Generation Y has most recently become the largest generational population in the world. Yet, they are still the most misunderstood bunch. I am a Gen-Y-er (fortunately or unfortunately) and I have seen this misunderstanding firsthand. To be honest, it is hard for me to even understand some of my generational peers these days. In a world of duck face selfies and high waisted shorts I am at a loss of words when I must associate myself with this group. However, I have taken it upon myself to become a bridge of understanding for those as confused as myself.

Whether it be in the workplace, society, or your own families, you must start to learn how to interact and live with this new younger generation and their way of thinking. Sooner, later, or even right now you have someone with this Generation Y title in your everyday life.

At the moment you might keep your distance. As they hold their phone up in the air and press their lips together for a photo, you might look on perplexed and upset for the future. But rest assured, I am here to help enlighten you and hopefully inspire a sense optimism and confidence interacting with such an odd specimen.

My name is Jack Sutherland, I am a College Student, Entrepreneur, and non-selfie taker. I have firsthand experience in understanding and interacting with Gen-Y. If still interested, I will take you along this comical, sometimes upsetting, road to understanding this new breed in hopes that we can start to see all of the good things associated with Gen-Y individuals. You will even learn how to bring out the great traits while living with the bad ones.

If I am successful, after this short journey through this book you might even feel compelled to jump in on the selfie in the #cubicalselfie taking place around the corner (or not, actually please don’t; I will also explain the “#” hashtag in a later chapter.) You will learn how to surround yourself with the Generation Y mind in order to look at things more optimistically. The future isn’t lost, you just don’t understand it yet.

What will your contributions do?!

With the funds raised, I will get this book to the masses so that we can all start to understand how to interact and live amongst this new generation.
