All it felt was hunger. An unyielding, insatiable need to consume. This was the most genuine feeling that the creature ever experienced. From the very first day of existence, it wanted more. As it clawed, swam, and slithered its way through the darkness, the hunger intensified. It knew that nourishment was close at hand, and its expectations were high. The current of the underground stream was weakening and getting easier to navigate. The creature brandished a knowing smile. The absolute darkness of the tunnel started giving way to a muted brightness, a telltale sign of reaching its destination. The creature stopped and looked up to assess its new prizes. With its face just barely breaking the water, it inhaled deeply, taking in the scents of activity just beyond the well’s edge nearly 600 feet above.
The creature bristled and settled in, eagerly awaiting for dinner to truly be served.
