Chapter One: Scarlette

2010: Scarlette brings her mother to radiation treatment. Her mother tries telling her about all the stuff she wants to be done after she passes. Scarlette has a hard time really grasping the gravity of the situation.

2020: Scarlette finds her father after he falls when nobody’s home. She brings him to the hospital and they happen to find a tumor in his leg. Scarlette then goes above and beyond to try and help her dad, who doesn’t want to be babied.

Chapter Two: Azure

2010: A 7-year-old Azure sees his very ill grandmother in the hospital. He also is at her house, with all his aunts, when she passes.

2020: A 17-year-old Azure is dismissed from school to visit his grandfather one last time. However he and his mother come too late, and once again he finds himself in the midst of his family during the loss of their parent.

Chapter Three: Jade

2010: A 17-year-old Sterling deals with the aftermath of losing his mother shortly before graduation. He struggles with finding people to confide in about both the loss and coming to terms with his gender identity.

2020: Now 27, Jade has to deal with the loss of her father and facing all of the people who will be attending the services. She’s confronted with people who do not accept her as a trans woman, extended family who do not know that she was formerly Sterling and even gets support from unlikely family friends.

Chapter Four: Crystal

2010: At her mother’s funeral, Crystal is faced with all of her mother’s coworkers telling her how excited they are for her to take over the business. Crystal is worried about having too much responsibility and also becoming a workaholic like her mom.

2020: Crystal realizes how privileged her husband and children are when they all act selfish and rude at her father’s services. She also gets reminded of her old values when talking to old family friends

Chapter Five: Rose

2010: Rose is watching her son and Hazel’s daughter during their mother’s funeral. Meanwhile, she has to listen to everyone tell Hazel how sorry they are for her (because most people only remember the oldest sibling). Rose feels like people should understand how much she’s dealing with since taking custody of Hazel’s children.

2020: A lot of people paying their respects tell Rose how proud they are of her, and that she’s had so much on her plate. Hazel’s daughters (Now adults) still talk to Rose like she’s their guardian, and ignore their real mother. Meanwhile, Rose isn’t paying enough attention to her son who’s going through a nervous breakdown.

Chapter Six: Hazel

2010: All of the family friends try to talk to Hazel as much as possible, telling old stories of when she was younger. When she can escape, Hazel is shown sneaking in nips and drinking when nobody is looking.

2020: A now sober Hazel is treated like a fuck up, with all the family friends now knowing her troubles. She tries to make amends with everyone she can and defending herself without asking for sympathy. While Rose is getting the attention Hazel was showered in at their mother’s funeral, Hazel discovers Rose’s son attempting suicide in the funeral home bathroom.

Chapter 7: Ruby

2010: Ruby is 7 months pregnant at her mother’s funeral. She allows her other two kids to run wild and shows no interest in them. Her (third) husband is there and appears to be flirtatious with the other sisters while their mourning.

2020: Ruby causes several interruptions to the service, and family friends keep asking her sister’s what is wrong with her. Her newest husband is seen giving Ruby pills while nobody is watching and telling her kids that they can leave because the funeral is nothing important.

Chapter 8: Violet

2010: At the very end of their mother’s funeral, all the siblings stand together to share memories.

2020: After the services, Violet deals with the rising tensions among her siblings.
