Prolog

The night air was filled with the sound of the young girl sobbing. She cried out one last time and then all was silent but the footsteps leaving the forest.

It was a dark night. The moon was new and the starlight could not reach the forest through the clouds. Deep in the woods, miles from nowhere, nothing could be seen. Yet even in this blackness, an even darker shadow grew. An inky black mass began to form. It repelled what insignificant light could be had and an outline of something monstrous took shape.

The temperature grew colder. All the creatures of the woods, from the deer and the coyote down to the worms and the flies, began to flee. Evil had crossed into our world and all life around it knew fear. Even the trees seemed to tremble as they began to shed their leaves.

Out of the black form, red eyes began to glow. They saw everything, nothing could hide from their piecing gaze, for this was a creature from another place. A realm of darkness and pain. The demon moved slowly through the woods, searching for that which had set him free. It did not take him long to find it.

There in a ditch, was the body of a young girl, no more than seven. She had been beaten and violated. Her clothing was torn and her pants were missing. The blood still flowed from her head where the rock had crushed her skull.

The demon took a deep breath, threw his head back and laughed. It sounded like something between nails on a chalkboard and glass being chewed. The horrendous noise echoed through the silent woods. The demon was happy. This was the act of evil that had allowed him into our plane.
