What happens when a fantasy becomes so real you cannot wake from it?

I have had a love for games all my life. There is something to be said about the ability of an art-form to take someone out of their daily lives and into another world entirely. And in my story that is exactly what happens - literally. Our protagonist and his friends are taken out of the world they know and into another world. What they thought was just a game becomes so much more.

It came to me a few years back when I thought: what would would happen if there was a game that was released that was so real that you literally could not tell the difference from reality and the game? Then, imagine that one day you woke up to find yourself in the game. There is no logging out and you could not remember even logging in. Is it a dream? Is it real? Have you been playing the game so long that you cannot even tell what is real anymore? Or was the game the real world all along? If you played a game that was so real that you could not tell the difference between the real world and the game world, how could you know which one was truly real?

This is what my story explores. What happens when your perception tells you something is real when there is no way it could be?
