“Kid, what this guy needed, the emergency room couldn’t provide. You break your arm? They can set a broken bone, cast it, give you some painkillers and send you on your way. But a broken soul? A broken mind? That’s something this place will never be able to fix,”

So, what is this?

This is a story I have been working on for some time. It has manifested over the course of my career in EMS and taken many forms, some better than others. In the end, what has come out of my time is a psychological thriller with some elements of horror that I believe many readers will be able to relate to.

Is this just another police or medical drama?

Not at all. The emergency calls displayed in this novel have been called terrifying, disgusting and brutal. I know this, because they are real events that have happened to me and my fellow practitioners and continue to happen every day, globally. Other authors ride along for a few weeks with a police service to maintain some factual security; but my sources are all hands-on and personal. Readers can expect a true-to-life take on what happens in the back of an ambulance, and a fictional depiction of some of the horrors that follow those practitioners home.

So its an autobiography?

Not even close. There is no connection between the characters depicted and the patients I have encountered in my career. More so, I have not emulated any of the practitioners depicted after coworkers or myself. That said, in attempt to avoid a lawsuit or the hate of my peers I have taken many hours to adapt real life experiences appropriately and with literary tact in the context of the story I want to tell. With some creative liberties in mind, I hope I have captured the essence of the job and some of the horrors that surround it and its practitioners. My goal has always been to respect those in the industry. I hope that when practitioners read this they will understand that it has been done out of love for the people I work with and the job itself.

I don’t work in the field of emergency services. Will I get anything out of this novel?

Absolutely. Just as many readers enjoy Michael Connelly or John Grisham, I believe there is an audience for an EMS-centered drama that can appeal to many. No medical knowledge will be necessary to enjoy the novel, but in the off-chance you have some, it may prove to be beneficial.

Stephen King stated that people will always love to read about other people’s work, and I plan on providing that.

Isn’t that a bit vain? Just assuming your job is cool enough that other people will want to read about it?

Probably. Although, if things go the way I’m hoping I may be doing this a little more frequently than EMS. The reality is that most of the population only knows of what happens in the back of our trucks based on watered-down television shows and the news. This is going to be the un-filtered, real deal.

So when will it be done and ready to order?

One day soon. I have been working at it since July 1, 2017 and was originally set to be completed in the early months of 2019. However with the necessities of fatherhood and life have been taking priority, I have fallen behind. As of June 2019 I am sitting at roughly 75,000 words and will continue to aim for completion at some point in 2019.

With that aside, thank you for taking the time to look at my story. I wish my critics a happy future read, because the pages that follow are filled with nothing but darkness.
