Morning again. Today is a good day, just like every other day. I get out of bed, I always sleep well, nothing ever crossing my mind while I sleep. I get up, I go to the kitchen, first stop on my morning routine.
The large house is empty. All guests from the party last night finally went home by the early hours of the morning. Dr Kett had me walking around, serving drinks and hors d’oeuvres. I didn’t mind it but I certainly did get a lot of looks from the guests at the party, I don’t really understand why. I was in a regular waiter uniform, there was nothing that should’ve stood out. I often get looks when I’m at parties, luckily for me, Dr Kett only hosts them when she’s unveiling a new robotic invention.
Although last night, I heard more whispers when I was walking past guests. The guests that have never been to Dr Kett’s parties seemed to have less tact. I only found it odd that they kept whispering when I walked by. Over the night, I heard one word repeated more than others. Hybrid. I wonder what they meant by that.
My least favorite part about these parties, is that I have to do everything for them. I set up all the tables and decorations and when everything is over and done with the next day, I have to clean up everything. I wouldn’t mind it nearly as much if some of the guests weren’t so messy. The labor is fine, it’s just part of my life. If Dr Kett tells me to do something, I do it. Simple as that.
Even though we just had the party last night, I still go to the kitchen first. Dr Kett will want me to make breakfast for her. I always wake up half an hour before her. It’s just enough time to make breakfast and take it to where she’ll start working in her home robotics lab.
I finish putting together a light breakfast, she always eats lighter on days after the parties, and make my way downstairs. Her lab is underground and the staircase leading down to it is lit up with harsh incandescent lights. I balance the plates on my forearm so I can reach into my pocket and pull out the key. She always keeps the door locked when she’s not in the lab. I guess I beat her down here this morning.
I walk in and set the plates on the dining table she keeps by the entrance. She doesn’t usually let me in farther than that. If she’s not here yet, maybe I have time to look around. I probably shouldn’t but I walk in a little bit, looking at the machines, cables and gears everywhere. She has an open glass tube, it’s bigger than I am. It looks like there used to be water or something in it but it’s empty now. I wonder what she’s been working on. Even when she has her release parties, she doesn’t usually let me see the latest invention.
I hear footsteps on the linoleum floor in the hallway outside. I’ve spent too much time in here, I really should get out before she finds me here. I walk back to the door, quickly walking out and shutting it behind me. It’s just in time too because Dr Kett turns the corner on the bottom of the stairs and stops when she sees me. She narrows her eyes a little, "Taiga."
I smile back, I didn’t really do anything wrong. "I left your breakfast on the table in the lab."
"Did you touch anything in there?" She’s always been a little careful about who sees what goes on in her lab. I shake my head, because even though I looked, when maybe I shouldn’t have, I didn’t touch anything. So I won’t be lying with my answer to her question. She’s quiet for a moment before saying, "I’ll call you if I need anything."
I nod and walk away from her, heading back for the stairs. I go back up to the main floor and back to the kitchen. I usually have a small breakfast after I make Dr Kett’s. I’m not really even that hungry this morning but I figure I’ll stick to my schedule. In the very least, it’ll delay me from cleaning the entire house.
I make myself toast and a cup of tea and take my time eating it. I’m not sure why, but this morning feels more lonely than other mornings. I usually always eat alone. I just feel more alone this morning. Hmm weird. I’ll just busy my mind with the day’s tasks. Starting here in the kitchen.
